Social Media Networks

 1. 1. Social Media Networks A New Era of Communication By Tiffany Gatewood ADV 492 : New Media Driver’s License
 2. 2. What is Social Media??

Social media is media designed to be disseminated through social interaction, created using highly accessible and scalable publishing techniques. Social media supports the human need for social interaction with technology, transforming broadcast media monologues (one to many) into social media dialogues (many to many).

 3. 3. Social Media
 4. 4. Social Media Networks= Addiction?

How has different social media networks evolved into a addiction?

- You know you're a Facebook addict when ...

You lose sleep over Facebook

You spend more than an hour a day on Facebook

You become obsessed with old loves

You ignore work in favor of Facebook

The thought of getting off Facebook leaves you in a cold sweat

 5. 5. Characteristics

Interactive: Another characteristic of modern social networks is the fact that they are so interactive. This means that a social network is not just a collection of chatrooms and forums anymore. Websites like Facebook are filled with network-based gaming applications, where you can play poker together or challenge a friend to a chess tournament. These social networks are quickly becoming a pastime that more people are choosing over television - because it's more than just entertainment, it's a way to connect and have fun with friends.

Community-driven: Social networks are built and thrive from community concepts. This means that just like communities or social groups around the world are founded on the fact that members hold common beliefs or hobbies, social networks are based on the same principle. Within most modern online social networks today, you'll find sub-communities of people who share commonalities, such as alumni of a particular high school, or an animal welfare group. Not only can you discover new friends within these interest based communities, but you can also reconnect with old friends that you lost contact with many years ago.

Relationships: Unlike the websites of the past, social networks thrive on relationships. The more relationships that you have within the network, the more established you are toward the center of that network. Like the concept most pyramid schemes are focused on, within online social networks, the concept really works in a powerful way. When you have just 20 contacts and you publish a note or an update on that page, that content proliferates out across a network of contacts and sub-contacts that's much larger than you may realize.

Emotion over content: While websites of the past were focused primarily on providing information to a visitor, the social network actually provides users with emotional security and a sense that no matter what happens, their friends are within easy reach. Whether suffering through divorce, break-up or any other family crisis, people are finding that the ability to jump online and communicate directly with a circle of friends provides a great deal of support in an otherwise unmanageable situation.

 6. 6. Some Disadvantages

Low costs

Time Consuming

Connections

Relationships

Scam and Harassment

Negative Energy

 7. 7. Some advantages

Reconnect with old friends

Promote Business

Refined Research

Expand Network Visibility

Affordable Visibility

 8. 8. YOUR IDEAS

What are some different add-ons you would like to see made to different social media networks?

What changes would you like to see to your favorite social network?

 9. 9. The Blog is Alive!!!!

How has blogging grown expeditiously into a powerhouse for communicating?

-Researchers have analyzed the dynamics of how blogs become popular. There are essentially two measures of this: popularity through citations, as well as popularity through affiliation (i.e. blogroll). The basic conclusion from studies of the structure of blogs is that while it takes time for a blog to become popular through blogrolls, permlinks can boost popularity more quickly, and are perhaps more indicative of popularity and authority than blogrolls, since they denote that people are actually reading the blog's content and deem it valuable or noteworthy in specific cases

 10. 10. Whats in it for me??

What is mostly important about having a social media network?

Does the product or brand have a specific demographic audience such as age, gender or lifestyle? This will aid with determining if more narrow, niche networks, like CafeMom, Ball Hype, Gather and StyleHive, are right for a brand.

What is the current level of web presence for the brand? If the brand has a limited web presence, social media applications and networks with scalable profiles, like Squidoo, Ning and Chi.mp might be right choices.

Is there substantial content and commitment to share on behalf of the brand? The more good content, the better suited a brand may be for more time-intensive daily sharing applications like Twitter, Jaiku and FriendFeed.

Does the business lend itself to offering product or service reviews, or do the company's products and services receive regular reviews from customers and users? If a company gives or receives frequent reviews, epinions, blippr, and Yelp are important options

 11. 11. Well which one??

The How-to of picking the right social media network for you

- Depending on your personality and what your interest is, only you can specify.

 12. 12. My Influences of Social Media

How the New Media Driver's Course has influenced me to go beyond just Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin. But to actually expand my horizons in the social media world.

-My whole experience with working with all the social media networks that I have signed up on has expanded my horizons of social media networking. 13. 13. Learning Experience

What I have learned from Derek Mehraban and how being a business professional has its perks using different social media networks for advertising purposes.

- I have definitely learned a great deal of new information within learning the concepts of new media and what it has to offer and how it will benefit me in the future.

 14. 14. Conclusion and Questions

So far, this class has been something quite of the ordinary. I have never signed up on so many social media networking websites. But it has definitely benefited me in the long run for my future of expressing my opinions online!

Questions
