    • TiEcon Delhi 2013 The last decade or so has been an extremely interesting one for Entrepreneurship in India – both exciting and challenging at the same time. Entrepreneurship is fast becoming the career of choice and that bodes well for us as a nation. In the worst economic fallout of the decade, where India has also faced a substantial slowdown, the salvation will come from innovative Entrepreneurs who are stepping up to create businesses and ventures catering to the growing domestic market, which is growing at 18% as a result. Entrepreneurs are creators and innovators. As the market needs change and as many companies go down the Kodak route, many new ones start the Google wave. It is this constant focus on breeding innovation that drives the ‘next’ venture and the ‘next’ entrepreneur. 2010-20 is the Decade of In- novation in India and the Prime Minister has given it centre stage by creating the National Innovation Council to embed Innovation in the DNA of the country and create a strong foundation to change the culture and way of thinking. As the competition for resources increases and the relevance of geographic boundaries decreases, it is innovation that becomes the key differentiator for driving growth and change. That is why the theme for this year’s TiEcon Delhi 2013 is “Innovation in Action”. Dear Friends, I am delighted to extend to you a very warm welcome to TiEcon Delhi 2013. This is and has been your conference just as TiE Delhi – NCR, is your organization. You should take great pride that your TiE Delhi – NCR has won “The Best Chapter Award” in the TiE global Universe for several consecutive years, as this would not have happened without your active engagement, support and contribution. These positive energies have now started to result in Delhi - NCR becoming thecity of choice for entrepreneurs and we are increasingly seeing high quality ventures, mentors and investors come together to create a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem.     • TiEcon Delhi 2013 Dear Friends, Welcome to TiEcon Delhi 2013! Although I have been a part of TiE Delhi – NCR for over a decade, this is my first year as President. I am excited to personally welcome you to TiEcon Delhi 2013: In- novation in Action. From an entrepreneur’s viewpoint the year gone by could surely have been more encouraging. We, as business folks had to dig in, and dig deep into our repository of ideas and solutions, innovating in ways more than one. It was, therefore, only logical for the TiEcon Delhi 2013 Organising Committee to arrive at this year’s theme for your conference – Innovation in Action. This is something we have all been practicing and TiEcon Delhi was the perfect forum to deliberate on the same. Over the 2 days, we intend to share, exchange and generate ideas around this critical theme. It is time to bank and capitalise on Innovation and what better forum than TiEcon to get his going. TiE, the world over, has been the most active and approachable platform and facilitator for entre- preneurs, investors, intrapreneurs and ideators to take their plans to the sea and further navigate themselves to desired destinations. It is my privilege to say that TiE Delhi – NCR has been one of the brightest lights in the worldwide network of TiE Global. The efforts have been recognised and acknowledged globally as TiE Delhi-NCR has now been recognised as the Best Chapter globally for the third year running! William Pollard Dear Friends, Welcome to TiEcon Delhi 2013. In its 13th year TiEcon brings with it Innovation in Action! To build a company, you need a good idea, a good entrepreneur, a good mentor and easy access to capital. Innovation in action has to be a sustained activity over a prolonged period. TiEcon Delhi 2013 is one of the largest entrepreneurship forums acting as an active catalyst to create an exciting and vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem in India. The two day mega event would focus on bringing out disruptive business models, translating thoughts into action, and celebrating success and failure at each step of entrepreneurship. The purpose of TiE is to encourage and nurture the next generation of entrepreneurs and add to the virtuous cycle of wealth creation spurring development and economic growth of the world. Founded in 1992 in Silicon Valley by a group of successful entrepreneurs, corporate executives and senior professionals with roots in Indus region, TiE is a unique platform which brings all the stake hold- ers – Entrepreneurs, Academia, Angel Investors, Venture Capitalists, Banks, Incubators and corporates together and makes them accessible to entrepreneurs. There are currently over 13,000 members including over 2,500 charter members in 60 chapters across 17 countries. It aims to identify the most innovative for-profit enterprises contributing to widespread skills development in India. After two intensive rounds of mentoring and screening, the best skills development solutions are se- lected with the support of sector experts. Winners are selected in 5 regions across India (East, West, North, South and Central) with one overall winner. Winners are given the opportunity to showcase their solutions to impact investors and experts in order to spur the growth of their enterprises over the long-term. Runway to Success Runway to Success is a TV series by Lufthansa, TiE Delhi-NCR and ET NOW, The reality show that rec- ognized SMEs with the most powerful business case. Spread over 11 episodes in which a shortlist of 27 entrepreneurs competes for a Grand Prize that empowers them to take off – quite literally – on the ‘Runway to Success.’ On air, the first 9 episodes of Runway to Success showcases the untold mantras of industry icons who charters a new flight path to success. In each episode, 3 entrepreneurs make their best business pitch to the icon, amongst which is picked a winner with the help of ourbusiness experts.     • TiEcon Delhi 2013 Lieutenant Commander Abhilash, aged 34 of Indian Navy, circumnavigated the globe (solo, non-stop and unassisted) in 151 days. Abhilash is the 1st Indian, 2nd Asian and 79th person in the world to carry out such a mission while sailing south of the three great capes. The rarity of the achievement is such that almost ten times the number of people have gone to space and 100 times more have climbed the Everest. Abhilash waited for 11 years for this opportunity on the 56-feet boat, Mhadei, with 70 foot high sails. Abhilash was mentored by Cdr Dilip Donde and is also Winner of Kirti Chakra (National Gal- lantry Award) and Tenzing Norgay Adventure Award. Lt. Cdr. This is not because of the inherent entrepreneurial environment that is created for them but more because of the scientific proof that genes influence whether people start busi- nesses, are self-employed, or have owned their own companies. I wouldn’t have believed this myself. My father is the real entrepreneur in the family. From a service background himself, he went to IIM-A in 1972 and has since not worked for a single day for anyone other than himself. Kicking the prestigious Indian Airlines job at an exorbitant salary of Rs. 700 (in those days of course!), he started exporting garments and has left no field unexplored, from manufacturing to finance, international collaborations, real estate developments and recently, the online lottery! So when I started a job at a Barings, a private equity firm in 2004, I was quite sure that service would be my path. My stint at McKinsey and several other consulting/Private Equity firms re-enforced this idea. In 2011 when I was given a chance to become part of the set-up team for a venture in the travel space, I looked at it as yet another step in my professional career. I must say I was infatuated; I loved the job and especially the travel that came with it. As part of setting up an offbeat chain of resorts in India, we were required to travel to various unexplored places, stay at quaint resorts and cottages, meet new people and convince them to sign up with us. This was truly my passion, and in a few months I decided to buy stake and become a co-founder of the company. It must be true then, the study on genetics because seeing my father and how he struggled at times, I was sure that being in a secure job was the best thing for me. Now, I’m constantly stressed, questions on strategy and the way forward keep me up at night and I couldn’t care less if had to work on Sunday, as long as the work got done. The benefits for any company to work with a broker are immense – our main chal- lenge is to build access to as many small companies as possible. And if you believe me, if this fire of starting something is strong enough for you to leave the job, you are all set to start an entrepreneurial journey. Next thing was to decide what to sell, whom to sell and what is in the solution/product for the buyer. We relied on our strengths and started pitching software testing which itself was a concept to most of the companies. They were really not sure why would they go for testing something which was built by a good engineering team. The focus and direction of our work got clear with every passing month/year. We tried things , we continued with the ones where we succeed, we learnt from the ones where we failed. The consistent thing was the passion to keep on moving and learning. Innovation is at the core of our consistent growth and providing additional value to the customer. Since day one, be it a profit or loss, Innovation was the only area which never got a cost cut.
