  • I left the title of this slide “BIOSIS Previews” to explain that the content in BCI is the same as BP.
  • Why is BIOSIS indexing important
  • Discover important research using the valuable BIOSIS specialized indexing or via citation navigation (CR search, forward and backward citation links).
  • Note that cited items are sorted by Year, and full author names are presented for more recent information as full names were in fact captured. Also – the first author of the paper is listed for each cited item, regardless of the searched author. Previously the searched author was always presented, using the format “…ORTH RJ” to indi9cate he or she was not the “first” author on the paper.

    • A new citation resource providing cited references for BIOSIS Previews content:
      • Cited references for BIOSIS unique items (beginning with 2006 production year data)
      • Cited references for BIOSIS items that overlap with items in the Web of Science (for all years, 1926 - forward)

    • Available only on the Web of Knowledge platform
Confidential - Thomson Reuters - Do Not Distribute BIOSIS Citation Index
  • BIOSIS
    • Widest collection of life sciences fields in the world
      • agriculture, biodiversity, biotechnology, botany, drug discovery, gene therapy, marine biology, wildlife conservation, zoology
    • BIOSIS Indexing
      • Degreed biologists – understanding of the content – index the records in BIOSIS databases.
      • Relational Indexing - When BIOSIS indexes a publication, it preserves the keywords from the original document (natural language) in context by placing them into the appropriate field - such as title, author, organism, gene name, etc.
      • Combinations of controlled-vocabulary terms and free-text terminology from the document itself provides for a greater level of “usability”.
  • BIOSIS – Specialized Indexing Key bibliographic data for journals, meetings, books, patents . Also, BIOSIS-unique value-added fields : Major Concepts Concept Code(s) Taxonomic Data Disease Data Chemical Data Gene Name Data Sequence Data Geographic Data Geologic Time Data Methods and Equipment Data Parts & Structure Data Miscellaneous Descriptors
  • All BIOSIS special indexing is presented in easy to read tables
  • BIOSIS Specialized Indexing This BIOSIS Previews record was found because “embryonic stem cells” appears in the Taxonomic Data section of the BIOSIS Previews record
  • Web of Knowledge 4.x BIOSIS Previews Record Cited by counts appear for all records in BIOSIS. However, these counts come from the Web of Science and do not include citations from unique BIOSIS content. References links only appear for BIOSIS records shared with Web of Science. For unique BIOSIS records only Cited by will be available.
  • BIOSIS Citation Index Web of Knowledge All Databases Citation Count Unique BIOSIS Citation Index Times Cited and Cited References Counts This source “Human Genomics” is not indexed in Web of Science and is unique to BIOSIS
  • The ISI Web of Knowledge 5 platform will present a full citation overview, including information from other resources with cited reference information – such as Web of Science and the Chinese Science Citation Database. BIOSIS Citation Index – Additional Methods of Discovery
  • BIOSIS Citation Index – Citation Map Take advantage of Citation Map to visualize two generations of forward and backward citations
  • BIOSIS Citation Index – New Search Features Lemmatization will look for alternative forms of your search term - for example, tooth and teeth
  • Full Results Counts Sort or Analyze an entire set of results. No 100,000 record limit.
  • Preview abstracts on Search Results pages
  • Citation Report, previously only available in Web of Science, can now be created in BIOSIS Citation Index
  • BIOSIS Citation Index – Marked List New – Analyze Results and Create Citation Report from a Marked List
  • BIOSIS CITATION INDEX Orth RJ The key Search component of BIOSIS Citation Index, that which separates it from any other BIOSIS resource on any platform, is the inclusion of a Cited Reference Search.
  • BIOSIS CITATION INDEX As with Web of Science, BIOSIS Citation Index includes a true cited reference index revealing exactly what has been cited, and allowing one to browse and select the exact cited items on which to search.
  • BIOSIS Citation Index - Summary
    • Combines BIOSIS specialized indexing with unique BIOSIS citation links
    • BIOSIS Citation Index is a true citation index, allowing for unique methods of discovery
    • Integrated with other Web of Science citation resources to present a full citation overview
    • Includes tools previously only available in Web of Science, such as Citation Report and Citation Map
    • Available only on the Web of Knowledge platform
