grandmother went something like this:
"Hello?"
"Hi, Grandma. It's me, Stephanie!"
(Pause) "Hello?"
(Louder) "Hi, Grandma!"
"Hello?"
(Shouting) "HI, GRANDMA!!!"
A type of hearing loss
It causes people have the difficulty of hearing.
Support with technologies assistance.
Severe hearing impairment (usually from 71dB HL to
90dB) as normal is -10dB HL to 15 dB HL.
Severe hearing impairment:
Degree of hearing loss Hearing loss range (dB HL)
Normal -10 to 15
Slight 16 to 25
Mild 26 to 40
Moderate 41 to 55
Moderately severe 56 to 70
severe 71 to 90
profound 91+
Pain in one or both ears
Dizziness, vertigo
Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
Pressure or fullness in one or both ears
People with severe hearing impairment have the difficulty of
making out the detail of the conversation. They may feel
embarrassed of asking people to repeat the conversation again.
Signs of severe hearing loss:
http://www.webmd.com/healthy-aging/severe-hearing-loss-
10/causes
What kinds of treatments can help
severe hearing impairment?
1. Hearing aids:
Devices that put it inside or
behind the ears. It is invisible,
very small with a tinny wire that
goes down inside the ear.
2. Directional
microphones:
It helps to make the
sounds coming straight
to you, so that it is more
easier to hearing the
conversations.
3. A telephone switch (T
setting): Filters out the
background noises.
4. Cochlear implants:
An electronic devices that help to captures sound, changes
into digital signals and transfer into sounds. Unlike a hearing
aid that amplifies sound, it directly send sound into the brain.
5. Sign language,
such as American
Sign Language
American Sign Language is
used in the United States,
Canada, Malaysia, Germany,
Australian, Norway and
Finland. It helps you have a
wonderful communication
with people.
Speak clearly
Provide appropriate gestures and facial
expressions
Eliminating the background sounds
Provide opportunities for children without
special need or children with special needs to
learn about the sign language.
FM systems can help children
with serve hearing impairment to
remove the background noise and
to have a short distance between
the speaker and the listener. So
that they can hear the conversation
more easier.

Reflection
My strength in this assignment would be I have an concept
of that severe hearing impairment means. So that I get an idea of
how to do this assignment. My weakness in this assignment would
be I need to spend my time to look for an explanation of the topic.
Also, I need to find out the agency that suitable for my topic.
Next, do a bit about the agency’s explanation. If I have time to
improve my assignment, I would spend much time on the
research than before because after spend much time on
research, I know how to explain the topic clearly. For this entire
course, it emphases that children with special needs have the
same opportunity to attend or participate in the childcare. We
need to be respect for people from all over the world and also
meet the needs of the child and the family.
