If the sheer thought of unleashing your inner pro or gigolo makes you feel violently ill, don’t read any further, because what I’m about to share with you is sure to offend! Whether you admit it or not, every one of us loves a bit of flirtatious attention. It boosts our self esteem; it strokes our ego and makes us feel attractive and desirable. I’m sure you’ll agree; you like to be the receiver of a good flirt every now and then, but how good are you at giving it? If you want to attract more friends on facebook (who are all potential customers) and grow your business, now’s not the time to be a prude, you need to know how to flirt your little toosh off!! All humans crave ‘authentic’ attention and connection, period! You’ve only got to look at the huge popularity of Facebook as proof of this. Facebook has 400 million users, and they’re smart, affluent, internet-savvy people whom marketers can no longer ignore. A different kind of flirting and marketing is now required in order to score with these influential players. If you think you are the only business doing what you do, think again! You might have had a ‘unique selling proposition’ (USP) when you first launched but now in today’s competitive online world, your uniqueness is becoming the norm. The more crowded the global marketplace becomes the more challenging it is to dominate and own your niche. In order to stand out in the crowd you need to have sex appeal. Consumers have heard every ‘pick up line’ in the book before so no amount of cajoling is going to convince them to go on a date with you; you need to flirt before you can convert! Although this ‘facebook flirting’ game may seem daunting and even a little racy, it’s actually quite simple, anyone can do it and I’m going to show you how! Confessions of a Facebook Flirt! Step 1: Preparing for your date Start making a list of people and groups on facebook that you have something in common with and who could also be your target market. The best place to start is by looking at friends of friends on facebook. Read what they’re writing about and if you can, research what they do. You should always be on the lookout to become friends with people who can help you and people you can help. Using the search function within facebook is very useful when looking for friends from your target market. For example if your target market is people who like to cook. If you type in ‘cooking’ in the facebook search field, a list of fan pages relating to cooking will come up as outlined in this picture. You can then go and ‘friend’ the people following this fan page. [Type text] Step 2: Working the room like a cocktail party guest It’s now to time to pop on your best stilettos ladies and men, pop on your pin stripe suits and start working the room! Whenever I’m invited to a party I go with 3 intentions: 1) to meet new and interesting people 2) to meet potential customers and 3) of course to have heaps of fun. Treat facebook the same way! Now that you have a list of people you’d like to include as your facebook friends, send these people a friend request. Attach a personal note with the friend request and in that note tell the person a little bit about you and what attracted you to them. For example, they might like to go fishing and so do you. Describe your personality in 3 words and then invite the other person to share the same with you. Here’s a tip, don’t include your business URL with your friend request, this can seem a bit pushy and also Facebook don’t like it and see it as a form of spamming. Remember do, not try and convert them into buyers or fans at this stage, you’re still flirting and courting only. When you receive friend requests before hitting delete or accept, do your homework. You wouldn’t just go out with anyone on a date, so why would you on facebook. If you can and if their information is not blocked, take the time to read up on what they do, what they’re interested in etc. If you like what you read and you feel they’re someone you’d like to connect with accept their request BUT accept differently to most!!! Send them a personal message (not on their wall) that you’re thrilled to be their friend. If they wrote a personal note to you with their request, acknowledge this and thank them and if they didn’t, explain to them the importance of doing this. You will separate yourself from the pack and be seen as a social media leader and that’s very sexy! Your Little Black Book Think of your facebook friends as people you would pop in your little black book. Facebook has a great function where you can separate your friends into categories/lists. You might have a list for personal friends, for business colleagues, for potential customers etc. This saves a lot of time later on when you go to send out an invite to an event or you want to communicate with just a particular group/s within your facebook friends’ database. Let the Flirting Begin! Now’s the time to start communicating and flirting with your new friends (and potential hot dates). You need to write a minimum of 1 status update a day. Here’s a big tip, always be strategic with your posts! Make sure that your post compliments what you do in business and supports your brand. When possible, pose a question in your status update that encourages your friends to respond and interact with you. Be consistent with your digital personality. [Type text] I recommend only overtly (as opposed to subtly) promoting your business once a week. It’s a bit like dating, you don’t ask your date to go home with you on a first date (well I don’t anyway), so the same goes on facebook. If you promote your business or push a sale too often, your converting outweighs your flirting and you won’t score! Whenever possible, include links (bling) with your status update. This might be to a YouTube clip, your own video, photos, a link to your website etc. This ensures you’re catering for all learning styles and it keeps your friends engaged. How to Get Your Name on the Door It’s not what you know or who you know, it’s who knows you! You may know a lot of people on facebook but if they don’t know you, you’re reducing your chance of expanding your networks and jumping the queue. Establish who else on facebook is servicing your potential customer and start commenting on their status updates. Warning, don’t try and push your services via someone else’s status update, this is bad business practice and won’t earn you any brownie points with the people commenting or the person who wrote the post. Make sure your comments are a valuable contribution and professional. Give credit where credit is due. If you’ve read a great post, re-post it and make sure you credit this person in your post. You do this for 2 reasons, firstly its common courtesy and secondly, because your re-post will appear on their wall for them and their friends to see. In closing, the best way to prosper on facebook is with a business fan page. If you’ve built rapport, trust, credibility and contributed to the community, your friends will be only too willing to join your fan page.
