  • RPL for enterprise solutions RPL Professional Development Framework DFEEST / COAG RPL Program 2009 Training and assessment can help enterprises with their business needs. There are fantastic opportunities for the VET sector to engage with enterprises using RPL as a tool to enhance their business growth. Power of RPL can lead to improvement with confidence, morale and business results, right across the enterprise. RPL is a developmental process for the individual, the team, the organisation, the industry and as a result it can be built into strategic plans, business plans and workforce plans. Streamlined, integrated and flexible RPL can underpin the enterprise’s workforce development strategy and help build its capacity and capability for improved productivity and profitability. What are enterprises looking for? Great business outcomes… They’re looking to…
  • RPL for enterprise solutions RPL Professional Development Framework DFEEST / COAG RPL Program 2009 RTOs must be able to demonstrate the benefits of RPL to enterprises, including… New skills may be required for a number of reasons – new product, new equipment, new process, new policy, new clients, new markets – build on existing skills recognised through RPL process Compliance – a formal RPL process (linked with the job role and tasks) can demonstrate compliance RPL processes can also demonstrate the quality of the products, services etc Link RPL assessment of generic skills with technical skills – RPL can improve safety – checking performance can highlight areas of improvement including safety Contribute to the community
  • RPL for enterprise solutions RPL Professional Development Framework DFEEST / COAG RPL Program 2009 It’s imperative that the VET sector demonstrates to industry / enterprises the benefits of formal training and assessment and this will require RTOs to adopt new ways of providing training and assessment which meets those business needs. RPL can be used for effective workforce planning and development. Develop a business culture – market to enterprises, sell the benefits…WIIFM (what’s in it for me - them) break down the myths fit in with workplace timeframes, be flexible support employees and managers administer their own learning produce clear business outcomes Understand the client’s business needs – take time to understand the business and the market in which it operates understand the challenges facing the business understand the skills held in the enterprise See handout – At a glance…approaches to assessment in small workplaces: a guide for RTO assessors Note – these same benefits and ideas are applicable to small, medium and depending on the context, large businesses.
  • RPL for enterprise solutions RPL Professional Development Framework DFEEST / COAG RPL Program 2009 Focus on business outcomes – focus on the immediate business needs, this will help win confidence of the enterprise show how RPL can produce bottom line results help the enterprise move from short term goals to workforce development and long term business goals Focus on work – focus on real work tasks – job profiling map competencies to job descriptions based on skills profile, use skills sets work activities often draw on a number of competencies at once See handout – At a glance…approaches to assessment in small workplaces: a guide for RTO assessors Note – these same benefits and ideas are applicable to small, medium and depending on the context, large businesses.
  • RPL for enterprise solutions RPL Professional Development Framework DFEEST / COAG RPL Program 2009 Adopt a strategic approach to evidence – RPL assessment must be time and cost effective focus on the relevant aspect of work being assessed eg safety, quality, customer service, problem solving, key technical skills, knowledge of key processes AND critical evidence that gives immediate indication of competence Choose the right staff – choose the right assessors and evidence collectors workplace staff need clear procedures for collecting evidence, mentoring and on-going professional support they need simple and effective tools for recording evidence, training in the use of the tools, basic info on RPL assessment process Use coaching to develop and assess competence – most workplaces’ employees gain skills and knowledge by being coached by others coaches know the business and how it operates coaches train employees in exactly the way the business operates coaches gain satisfaction from passing on their skills and knowledge, and they’ll promote training in the workplace See handout – At a glance…approaches to assessment in small workplaces: a guide for RTO assessors Note – these same benefits and ideas are applicable to small, medium and depending on the context, large businesses.
  • RPL for enterprise solutions RPL Professional Development Framework DFEEST / COAG RPL Program 2009 Control the costs… The cost of services is a major issue for all workplaces. As with any other service, owners and managers will want to control the cost of assessment and ensure they receive value for money. RTOs need to be aware of the costs for both RTOs and enterprises in conducting RPL (and training and assessment) and the ways in which these costs can be controlled. Some tips for cost saving – Incorporating assessment activities into real workplace tasks Conducting assessments on a ‘just in time’ basis Using workplace staff as evidence collectors Carefully planning the evidence collection process so that an emphasis is placed on the progressive collection of workplace evidence that is directly related to the relevant competency standards Using small group assessments to reduce unit costs Assessing whole work tasks rather than single units of competency – skills sets, clusters Empowering employees so that they can manage the evidence collection process Using a strategic approach to the sorting, consideration and judgement of evidence Networking and sharing assessment tools and information with other assessors Determining the least-cost location for conducting assessment activities Ensuring that employees have access to an efficient RPL process so that existing skills are acknowledged See handout – At a glance…approaches to assessment in small workplaces: a guide for RTO assessors Note – these same benefits and ideas are applicable to small, medium and depending on the context, large businesses.
  • RPL for enterprise solutions RPL Professional Development Framework DFEEST / COAG RPL Program 2009 Market ethically… It is critical that RTOs: Provide enterprises with accurate information on their training and assessment services Clearly establish the nature of the services to be delivered Monitor the quality, relevance and timelines of the assessment services provided to enterprises Establish clear procedures for dealing with customer complaints and concerns See handout – At a glance…approaches to assessment in small workplaces: a guide for RTO assessors Note – these same benefits and ideas are applicable to small, medium and depending on the context, large businesses.
  • RPL for enterprise solutions RPL Professional Development Framework DFEEST / COAG RPL Program 2009 Working with enterprises requires building relationships and understanding their needs. See handout – At a glance…approaches to assessment in small workplaces: a guide for RTO assessors Note – these same benefits and ideas are applicable to small, medium and depending on the context, large businesses.
