About The Refinement Club About The Refinement Club Presentation Transcript

  • WHAT IS THEREFINEMENT CLUBWhy we do what we doThe Refinement ClubMating Ideas
  • WHO WE AREGRO LARSSON &JOHANNES RUMMELHOFFWe both attended the Art Directionprogram at Westerdals School ofCommunication from 2006 -2009. Atthe end of this period we startedworking on some very big and verysecret ideas. The Refinement ClubMating Ideas
  • 2010A change of attitudeGro went to Hyper Island inStockholm after Westerdals, andcame back with some newthoughts. Meeting Johannes over “Ideas are like rabbits. You get aa coffee and talking about howlocation based services, like couple, learn how to handleGowalla and Foursquare, could them, and pretty soon you havebe better sparked a plan. Weagreed that there were a lot of a dozen.”things we could make better, andthat this called for a club. TheRefinement Club. - John SteinbeckThe Refinement ClubMating Ideas
  • SHARINGNo more secret plansDiffering from our plans atWesterdals, we wanted to shareour new ideas. We both haddiscovered that keeping ideassecret didn’t get you or yourconcepts anywhere. Neitherwould nursing just one ideaforever either. So we decided onsome rules for our club. EveryWednesday we would meet andwork on a new concept, and thenext Wednesday we would post iton our tumblr:therefinementclub.tumblr.comThe Refinement ClubMating Ideas
  • IN THE BEGINNINGCreative overflowIn the beginning there wereplenty of services, products andaspects of life we had the need toimprove. That was what we did,we made dinner, solvedproblems and shared them everyWednesday. It was like going tothe gym, but for the brain. The Refinement ClubMating Ideas
  • NEXT PHASENo more problems? After approximately 6 months ofblissful productivity, we startedto run out of problems. Itbecame harder, but we kept at it.At the same time we saw thatthe point of what we were doingwasn’t the concepts we came upwith or that we solved problems, but the intensity with which wedid it. We sat down to createsomething new every week, andwe shared all our ideas with noreservations. The Refinement ClubMating Ideas
  • CHANGE OF FOCUSMantra timeSo then we changed our focusmore towards the sharing, “If you have an apple and I havetowards exploring and facilitating an apple and we exchange theseideas. We started thinking aboutthe possibility of creating an idea apples then you and I will stillcommunity and our mantra each have one apple. But if youbecame “Let ideas meet and have an idea and I have an ideamate”. and we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas.” - George Bernard ShawThe Refinement ClubMating Ideas
  • THE PHILOSOPHY& missionIdeas become better when theyhave more mothers and fathers.Ideas that are shared sow seedsto other ideas and createsbigger, better and moreunexpected concepts. The Refinement ClubMating Ideas
  • KILLING DARLINGSA techniqueSharing also helps you parkideas you carry around, andmakes room for new and betterideas. “The problem is never how to get new, innovative thoughts into your mind, but how to get old ones out.” - Dee HockThe Refinement ClubMating Ideas
  • KEEP REALITY OUTRestrictionsWe believe that money andproduction issues should be keptout of the creative process. Ideasthat aren’t realized are notworthless, ideas that are not “Money never starts an idea. Itshared are worthless. Thepossibilities are endless if they is always the idea that starts theare. One idea can become a money.”  thousand new ones. - Owen LaughlinThe Refinement ClubMating Ideas
  • TO DISCOVER THE UNEXPECTED YOU NEED TO COMBINE THE UNLIKELY. LIKE DIFFERENT PEOPLE.The Refinement ClubMating Ideas
  • THE PRESENT‣ therefinementclub.com Sharing ideas‣ facebook.com/therefinementclub Invite to discussion‣ @johannesr & @rexcreation Ask for input‣ Wednesday meetings Guests are welcome‣ Pitch Nights Mass-refinements every 3 monthsThe Refinement ClubMating Ideas
  • Pitch NightFrom pitching to mass-refiningWe call our Pitch Nights “Pølser,Pils & Pitch”. It translates toBeer, Sausages & Pitch. It gotthat name because we like beerand sausages, and “pitch” fitsnicely in with those words. Wewanted to gather interestingpeople to talk about interestingthings, and beer and food is anice way to lure people to join us.In the beginning the thought wasthat people would pitch theirideas, get input and meet peoplethey could collaborate with. The Refinement ClubMating Ideas
  • Pitch NightFrom pitching to mass-refiningInstead we start with an idea, ora problem, and work in plenumand groups to come up withseveral different ideas which wethen share. Up until now we havearranged two Pitch Nights wherewe have worked on “How to usetechnology to encouragealtruistic actions?” and “Whatcomes after online dating?”Next time we will work with“How to activize and leverage theresources of senior citizens?”.The Refinement ClubMating Ideas
  • PITCH NIGHT:‣ Brings people with different backgrounds and interests together‣ Creates a breeding ground for ideas‣ Is a place where thoughts and concepts can get together in an informal but controlled setting. Results can freely be built upon and be used by anyoneThe Refinement ClubMating Ideas
