  • 1. Name: ________________________________ Stuart Pennington – Music/Music TechnologyOverview:Dubstep is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in southLondon. Its rhythms are usually syncopated, and often shuffled orincorporating tuplets. The tempo is nearly always in the range of 138-142bpm. Dubstep rhythms typically do not follow the four-on-the-floorpatterns common in many other styles of electronic dance music such asTechno and House, they tend to rely on longer percussion loops. Wobble Bass: One characteristic of Dubstep is the wobble bass, where an extended bass note is manipulated rhythmically. This style of bass is typically produced by using a Low frequency oscillator. This will manipulate certain parameters of a synthesizer such as volume, distortion or filter cutoff. The resulting sound is a timbre that is punctuated by rhythmic variations in volume, filter cut-off, or distortion.Creating the Wobble: 1. Once you have an ‘Instrument’ track loaded in Logic, select the instrument as the ES2 synth. 2. Use the pre-set sound of ‘Analog Saw Init’. This can be found in ‘Tutorial Settings’. This is a bare Saw Synth sound and a great place to start.3a. Now Cutoff Filter 2 will have 3b. This will modulate the frequencies in and out and giveassigned a Low Frequency the sound that characteristic ‘wobble’. LFO 2 will be usedOscillator. for this, it oscillate in time with the tempo. 3c. Using the LFO 2 Modulation Routers; set the Target to Cutoff 2 and the Source as LFO2. This will now change the Cutoff rate set by the LF02, shown left. Cutoff Filter 2 3d. Set the amount of modulation with the Green Triangle on the right. Higher up will mean the modulation is more noticeable in the mix.
  • 2. 4a. You can now change 4b. By right clicking and holding down, a menuthe Wave Form type from will appear. These are ‘Digiwaves’ and allow fora Saw Tooth Wave to greater character for the sound being generated.Sine Wave. These are a type of sound that is none traditional, different from the simple Sine, Saw Tooth and Square Waves. 5. You may now want to add Distortion, found at the top right of the ES2. This will give the sound more energy and dirt.6. If you would like todevelop even greatertexture to the soundturn-on Oscillator 2 and 7. Use the ‘De-Tune’, toset the wave type to create a deep bassSine. You could even use sound. Set to -12 (onethe ‘Digiwaves’ again octave) normally ishere. enough and will not affect the quality of the instrument. 8. Final thing to remember is that is 1 you are using two or more oscillators change the mixer so both can be heard equally. The mixer is a Triangle, the 2 top point is Oscillator 1, left is 2 and the bottom point is 3. Wherever the Green Dot is, that is what you will hear 3 more of.Words to Remember:Word MeaningLow FrequencyOscillatorTimbreWave FormSine Wave
