  • 3. Post Punk genres grew towards the end of 1970’s. Ska had grew mainly in the UK, alone side that of 2 Tone. 2 Tone got it’s name from the record label that was releasing artists with a strong Reggae influence. Very closely related to Punk genres, when Punk artists started to experiment. Fundamental addition was the introduction of the Synthesizer , this genre of music can be heard in Joy Division , but very greatly throughout New Order , mainly with how producer Hannett would mix drums. This was a major influence for later genres like New Romanticism and Synth Pop . The genre retains its roots in the punk movement but is more introverted, complex and experiential. With bands like Joy Division, New Order, The Cure & The Talking Heads.
  • 4. - The music scene in Manchester immediately before the Madchester era had been dominated by bands such as The Smiths , New Order and The Fall and were a great influence on this genre. - The music that emerged from the scene mixed Alternative , Psychedelic Rock and Dance . - Nightclubs like the Hacienda allowed especially Factory artists to perform to large audiences and build popularity. - The club also started to play genres like Chicago ’s Acid House . Alternative rock has been used as a catch-all phrase for rock music from Underground artists in the 1980s, and all music descended from punk rock (including punk itself, New Wave and Post-Punk ).
  • 5. Лев Сергеевич Термен , most famous for his invention of the Theremin. He patented the device in 1928. The controlling section consists of two metal antennas which sense the position of the player’s hands and control oscillators for both Frequency ( Pitch ) and Amplitude ( Volume ), the most outstanding is it is played without being touched! This instrument was a great source of inspiration for the America inventor Robert Moog and his later electronic instrument the Moog Synthesizer . His company still produces Moog Theremins to this day.
  • 6. Moog created the first voltage-controlled subtractive synthesizer to utilize a keyboard as a controller . Moog said; "I'm an engineer. I see myself as a toolmaker and the musicians are my customers. They use my tools.” This instruments are the main reason why MIDI controllers of today are still based around the shape of a standard piano keyboard. The fist synthesizers were analogue , meaning no microchips and all the internal elements and sounds are created through circuit resistance . This technology lead lead the way for the digital era of electronic instruments.
  • 7. ‘ Switched on Bach ’ – 1968, using electronic instruments for classical music. ‘ Clockwork Orange ’ – from the film ‘ A Clockwork Orange ’, wrote all music for the Stanley Kubrick film. Wendy Carlos used the new analogue synthesizers , especially the Moog collection to develop unthinkable music for film, with a heavy reference to classic compositions nothing of this sort had been heard before. - By influencing simple parameters such as the sound’s envelope and what fundamental frequencies are present, all manner of timbres could be created. Also did all the music for the first ‘ Tron ’ movie.
  • 8. Synthpop is a genre of music in which the Synthesizer is the main instrument. It originated as part of the New Wave movement, Post Punk Rock . Early Punk fashion can still be seen today in modern Synth Pop . The style includes the exploitation of artificiality (i.e., the synthesis of sounds from waveforms) where the synthesizers are not used to imitate acoustic instruments, the use of mechanical sounding rhythms , vocal arrangements as a counterpoint to the artificiality of the instruments, and Ostinato patterns for effect. Synth Pop Origins New Wave, Disco, Post Punk Typical Instruments Synthesizers, Drum Machine, Electric Guitar & Bass, Sequencer, Vocoder Keyboard and Drums. Popularity 1980’s First-wave. 2010’s Second wave. Derivative Forms Ambient Pop, Electro Pop
  • 9. An Ostinato is always a succession of equal sounds, wherein each note always has the same weight or stress. The repeating idea may be a rhythmic pattern, part of a tune, or a complete melody in itself. As the electronic music world developed, sequencers began to be added to synthesizers as Arpeggiators, where complex patterns could be created at a touch of a button.
    • Important Artists:
    • First Wave 1980’s
    • Pet Shop Boys
    • New Order
    • Duran Duran
    • Karftwerk
    • Men Without Hats
    • 2 nd Wave = La Roux, Lights, Cut Copy
The Roland TR-77 drum machine was very important for the rhythmic sound of Synth Pop .
  • 10. New Romanticism was a youth Fashion and Music movement in the United Kingdom that began in the late 1970s in England and during the early 1980s.
