For the full article: http://mot.ly/UMxDRR -- According to International Data Corporation, smartphones are likely to grow 39.5%, year-over-year, during the holiday quarter. And overall smartphone shipments are expected to almost double over the next four years.

The iPhone 5 wasredesigned to be noticeably thinner and lighterand now includes 4G LTE.For investors: The iPhone 5 was supplyconstrained for much of the quarter, but thatsituation has dramatically improved andinventory is now in stock online and in mostretail locations. Apple is expected to sellupwards of 50 million units or more of its mostimportant product in the fourth quarter.

Google (LG) Nexus 4Carrier availability: AT&T, T-MobilePrice range on contract: $199 (T-mobile); Alsoavailable unlocked and off contract directlyfrom Google Play from $299 - $349.Operating system platform: AndroidConsumer appeal: The Nexus 4 is the currentAndroid flagship directly from Google. Nexusdevices have always set the bar for Androidand have offered a "pure" version of Androidwithout third-party software modifications.The Nexus 4 lacks 4G LTE due to Googlesbroader strategy with the device, but thatdoesnt appear to have hurt sales.For investors: Google is aggressively trying toundermine carriers roles with the Nexus 4 byprimarily selling it directly and off contract atrelatively competitive prices. Google is hopingfor wider international adoption in severalcountries, which is one reason it doesnt haveLTE.

It features a larger screen and isthe extremely successful follow up toSamsungs Galaxy S2.For investors: The Galaxy S3 was the top-sellingsmartphone in the world in the thirdquarter, topping both the iPhone 4S andiPhone 5 individually with 18 million units.Samsung said the device sold 30 million unitsin 157 days.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2Carrier availability: AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-MobilePrice range on contract: $300 on AT&T,Verizon, Sprint; $370 on T-MobileOperating system platform: AndroidConsumer appeal: The Galaxy Note 2 is also afollow up to the first Galaxy Note. It appeals toconsumers that want an even larger screenthat approaches tablet territory. The GalaxyNote 2 also comes with a stylus for use withthe larger display.For investors: Samsung has said that it sold 5million units in 2 months after the devicelaunched. The Galaxy Note 2 shows that thereis an addressable market in the "phablet"category of devices with extremely largedisplays.

LG Optimus GCarrier availability: AT&T, SprintPrice range on contract: $199Operating system platform: AndroidConsumer appeal: The Optimus G is the devicethat Googles Nexus 4 is based on, so it sharessimilar hardware. One big difference is that theOptimus G does support 4G LTE data, unlikethe Nexus 4. This is currently LGs flagshipAndroid smartphone.For investors: LG is climbing the ranks ofsmartphone vendors, selling a record 7 millionsmartphones in the third quarter, although theOptimus G launched in the fourth quarter.Both the Optimus G and the Nexus 4 that itbuilds for Google will likely boost itssmartphone unit sales in the fourth quarter.

Nokia Lumia 920Carrier availability: AT&T exclusivePrice range on contract: $100Operating system platform: Windows PhoneConsumer appeal: The Lumia 920 is Nokiasnewest device running Windows Phone 8.AT&T continues to work closely with Nokia andscore device exclusivity, just like it did with theprevious Lumia 900. The Lumia 920 comeswith a high-quality PureView camera andwireless charging.For investors: The Lumia 920 aggressivelycomes in at a lower $100 price point thanother flagships that typically retail for $200 oncontract. Nokia continues to shift smartphonessales to its Lumia family, which comprisedalmost half of the 6.3 million smartphonesshipped last quarter. The 920 is the mostimportant of the Lumia devices.

HTC Windows Phone 8XCarrier availability: AT&T, Verizon, T-MobilePrice range on contract: $100 - $200Operating system platform: Windows PhoneConsumer appeal: HTC is also adoptingWindows Phone 8 with a new device that looksvery similar to the Lumia 920. Some reviewerseven think its a better smartphone than thecompeting Lumia 920. The Windows Phone 8Xcarries a high-resolution display that is on parwith the iPhone 5 Retina display.For investors: HTC is very interested indiversifying into other platforms, after it fellhard with its Android strategy at the hands ofSamsung. Giving Windows Phone a renewedpush will broaden its horizons and also helpboost Microsofts market share.

HTC Droid DNACarrier availability: Verizon exclusivePrice range on contract: $200Operating system platform: AndroidConsumer appeal: The Droid DNA offers thehighest resolution display currently availableon a smartphone at 441 pixels per inch (ppi).Thats much higher than Apples Retinadisplays and a key selling feature for the DroidDNA. The device carries a full 1080p resolutionin its 5-inch display.For investors: HTC is aggressively pushing specswith the hopes of turning around its fallingfortunes. The Droid DNA is offered exclusivelyon Verizon and taps its popular Droid brand.

Motorola Droid RAZR HDCarrier availability: Verizon exclusivePrice range on contract: $200Operating system platform: AndroidConsumer appeal: The Droid RAZR HD alsooffers a high-resolution screen packed into alarger AMOLED display. True to the RAZRbrand, the device is incredibly thin. There isalso a Droid RAZR MAXX HD version thatfeatures a larger battery for longer battery life.For investors: Ever since being acquired byGoogle, Motorola no longer reports unit salesfigures. Motorolas mobile device operationshad been generating losses for the previousfour quarters, but eventually the companycould see higher levels of Android integration ifGoogle decides to collaborate closer with itssubsidiary at the risk of alienating otherhardware partners.
