Transcript of "Dragon NaturallySpeaking Professional 12 review"

  1. 1. KnowBrainer Review of NaturallySpeaking Ver. 12(available from Nuance Certified Resellers, including KnowBrainer Inc.)The following review covers the Ver. 12 Editions of DNS Home, Premium, Pro, and Legal. It may be subject to revision/update as we continue working with the program, orshould there ever be a service release patch. In this event, we will add the date of thelatest revision to the review date at the top of the file.Note: Dragon Medical 12 is not due to be released until 2013. This review will beupdated to include Dragon Medical 12 at that time.Introduction:NaturallySpeaking Ver. 12 includes over 100 new features and enhancements, including:improved accuracy, Hotmail/Gmail support, IE9 support, improved Firefox & Chromesupport, Android support, the ability to disable commands, significantly improved built-intutorials, smart formatting, and improvements to the microphone Asleep state (toprevent the microphone from accidentally waking up). In the professional versions, you’ll also find remote dictation support for Windows 7 Ultimate Server and WindowsServer 2008. In our opinion, though, the most significant improvement has got to be theincrease in SPEED. The two issues our clients found most problematic with Ver. 11 werespeed (a slight overall lag in time before the spoken words appeared on the screen, making Ver. 11 slower than Ver. 10) and latency issues (unusually long delays before1DNS 12 Review(Published on 8-6-12)(Updated on 9-1-12)Lunis OrcuttLive Chat(615) 884-4558Sales@KnowBrainer.com
  2. 2. the spoken words appeared on the screen). Ver. 12 appears not only to be much fasterthan Ver. 11, but also faster than Ver. 10, with seemingly no latency. While Ver. 11introduced dual core multi-threading, Ver. 12 upped the ante by introducing true parallelprocessing (using both processors simultaneously, rather than bouncing back and forthas was the case with Ver. 11). Since we use voice commands throughout ourKnowBrainer 2011/2012 command utility, we were really impressed with the two new(British and American English) text-to-speech readers. There is nothing like hearing thevelvety female response of “Yes, boss” when we say the KnowBrainer “Computer”command. Check out the following list of new features we found notable, both pro andcon.Pros:● NaturallySpeaking 10 introduced BestMatch III (trigram algorithms).NaturallySpeaking 11 introduced BestMatch IV (quad gram algorithms) and dual coreprocessing. NaturallySpeaking 12 introduces BestMatch V. Also new to Ver. 12, is speechmodel parallel (simultaneous) dual core multithreading, which is not only faster inBestMatch V, but also increases speed in BestMatch III and IV (for slower computers).● The Ver. 12 installation bundles a new Adobe Flash plugin. This eliminates the problemof a SendKeys or Hookerr error which some users (of previous versions ofNaturallySpeaking) have been experiencing.● Dictation speed (how long it takes one’s dictation to appear as words in the document)appears faster than previous versions.● While we were unable to verify Nuance’s 20% higher accuracy claim (translation =20% fewer errors), we were able to verify modest accuracy gains. Any significant errorreduction saves valuable (correction) time, not to mention reducing frustration.2
  3. 3. ● Enhanced webmail support, including significantly improved support for Gmail andHotmail, will be a definite plus for many users.● Beginning with Ver. 11, training a user profile was often unnecessary (for end-userswith a US mid-continental accent). Ver. 12 improves on that technology.● While previous versions of NaturallySpeaking included Bluetooth support, we couldn’trecommend using a Bluetooth microphone in Ver. 11. This was due to the limited, 8 kHzsampling rate (4 kHz frequency response). Ver. 12 introduces a new wideband Bluetooth16 kHz sampling rate, making the use of Bluetooth microphones a viable choice(including the option to skip general training).● Smart Format Rules detect one’s style of formatting, even offering to tailorNaturallySpeaking’s format options to suit one’s tastes “on-the-fly”.3
  4. 4. ● All previous versions of NaturallySpeaking utilized the same dated (late 1990’s) text-to-speech engine. Ver. 12 includes 2 significantly improved, very natural sounding, USand British female voices. They sound so good, one may feel compelled to use them toread back text or add verbal acknowledgment to Advanced-Scripting commands(exclusive to the professional versions of NaturallySpeaking and/or the KnowBrainer2012 command utility).● Ver. 12 includes automatic user profile optimizing; as well as prompts to allowNaturallySpeaking to optimize a user profile, when saving.● Ver. 12 adds an almost staggering amount of smart pop-up support, which new userswill likely appreciate, but experienced users may choose to disable.● The option to enable or disable many more features and commands makes Ver. 12significantly more flexible.● Ver. 12 adds faster correction with improved correction choices.4
  5. 5. ● DNS 11.5 Premium and higher introduced the option of using an iPhone as a wirelessmicrophone over a Wi-Fi network. Ver. 12 additionally includes this option for AndroidSmart Phones (including the new barcode configuring) and now also includes thesefeatures in the Home Edition.● Ver. 12 is faster at saving user files.5
  6. 6. ● Ver. 12 adds support for Gmail and Hotmail via browser extensions for Rich InternetApplications, which Nuance refers to as RIAs.6
  7. 7. ● Ver. 11 introduced a number of new features, such as the XYZ disambiguation. WhenVer. 11.5 introduced Twitter and Facebook commands, some more seasoned usersrequested the ability to disable them. Ver. 12 delivers, including much more user control7
  8. 8. over these types of features.8
  9. 9. ● By default, Ver. 12 automatically opens the Dictation Box when attempting to dictateinto a non-Full Text Control (non-Select-and-Say) application or window. While newusers may appreciate this feature, more experienced users have been given have theoption to turn it off.9
  10. 10. ● In Ver. 12 the User Restore Wizard opens automatically, when attempting to open acorrupted user profile, to assist in importing one’s backup user.● Ver.12 includes improved tutorials, training and help files.● Ver. 12 includes a new global open top website for <keywords> search command.Example: Say open top website for KnowBrainer (the other no-brainer) and see whathappens.Note: You may want to consider removing the checkmark from the prompt to trim theprocess down to a single command.● In Ver. 12, the List all windows command now includes Dragon applications.10
  11. 11. ● Ver. 12 has larger, more viewable fonts in DragonPad, the Accuracy Center, Sidebarand Tip of the Day.● Ver. 12 has improved digital recorder support, including a new enhancedAutoTranscribe Folder Agent (for batch recording) in the professional versions.● Ver. 12 users now have the option to preserve Word Properties (custom rules) whenexporting vocabularies in XML format (exclusive to the DNS Pro and Legal editions).● Ver. 12 (Dragon Pro and Legal editions) supports remote use on a Windows Server2008 R2 and Windows 7 Ultimate, utilizing Microsoft’s free Remote Desktop connection(formally known as Terminal Services Client). In other words, one can use Dragon froma local workstation that doesn’t have NaturallySpeaking installed on it.11
  12. 12. Cons:● In Ver. 12, DNS still has no numbering feature. One of the most useful and impressivefeatures in WSR (Windows Speech Recognition) is its ability to number every control in aWindow. We love that and, because of our work for the physically challenged, havealways hoped to see something similar in DNS.Note: Fortunately, for those who need it, one can add this feature to DNS 12 withShowNumbers Plus, a relatively inexpensive third-party add-on utility from ErgoarchitectAssistive Technologies.● BestMatch V is very processor intense and may not be ideally suited to all computers;especially slower computers. If one is using a dual core computer with at least 6 Gb ofRAM, NaturallySpeaking will (by default) automatically select BestMatch V with amedium-size vocabulary, when creating a new DNS user profile. In our tests, we havefound that 6 Gb of RAM, when working with BestMatch V simply isn’t enough. Werecommend a minimum of 8 Gb RAM utilizing BestMatch V or ideally, 16 GB of RAM.● We initially recommended against the use of BestMatch V, with our prerelease versionof NaturallySpeaking 12, but fortunately, Nuance was able to conduct some last-minutecoding changes which took care of most issues. However, we have noted a slight delayin command deployment so if you use a lot of commands and have issues with the 2 to3 second delay, which may occur before command deployment, you might want toconsider creating a BestMatch IV profile.● By default, DNS sets the Speed vs. Accuracy bar at the 50% position (unless yourcomputer is underpowered). However, even the fastest computers default to the 50%mark. In our tests, we found that increasing the Speed vs. Accuracy bar (to the MostAccurate setting) increased accuracy without impacting overall speed (on qualified12
  13. 13. computers).13
  14. 14. ● While new users will undoubtedly appreciate many new features (such as the DictationBox springing up every time you attempt to dictate into a non-Full-Text-ControlWindow) more experienced users will likely enjoy the option of toggling off most of thesefeatures. Think of it kind of like the way we all customize Windows OS.Nuance System Requirements:CPU: 2.2 GHz Intel® dual core or equivalent AMD processor. 15. 15. KnowBrainer System Recommendations (What We Have Come To Believe IsNeeded):CPU: 2.6 GHz Intel® quad core i7 processor (Minimum 2.4 GHz dual core i5 processor).Processor Cache: 6 MB L2 cache.Free hard disk space: 3.2 GB (4 GB for localized non-English versions)Supported Operating Systems:•Microsoft Windows Vista SP2 7/8, 64-bit•Microsoft Windows XP (NOT RECOMMENDED)•Windows Server 2008 SP1, SP2 and R2, 64-bitRAM: 4 GB for Windows XP (not recommended), Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows Server2008 64-bit, minimally 8 and preferably 16 GB for Windows 7/8 and Windows Server 2008 64-bit.KnowBrainer Approved USB External SoundcardA DVD-ROM drive for installation. If your computer doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM drive you canoptionally use a DVD-ROM drive simply copy the installation disc to a USB flash drive but if youchoose either of the previous approaches or if you’re built-in DVD-ROM drive is too slow, youshould copy the contents of the installation disc to a folder on your desktop and double-click thesetup.exe icon with the green flame to install.Recommendations:● For reasons of both accuracy and productivity, we really have to recommend everyDNS user (including Ver. 11 users) upgrade to DNS Ver. 12. For anyone consideringupgrading from an earlier version of NaturallySpeaking, perhaps the most compellingreason to upgrade is to escape the Ver. 11 latency issues. Other notable Ver. 12advantages include increased dictation speed, improved accuracy, improved vocabularyrule recognition, smart formatting, BestMatch V and not having the microphone turnitself back on (from the “Asleep” state) every few minutes.● We additionally recommend WSR users consider DNS Ver. 12 since the speed, accuracy and functionality are simply incomparable.15
  16. 16. ● We also recommend that Windows XP users and Windows Vista/7 32-bit users bite thebullet and upgrade to Windows 7/8 64-bit, because they’re going to need the additionalRAM to get the most out of Ver. 12.Note: While the manufacturer recommends over 4 Gb of RAM, that is a minimumrecommendation and does not allow you to work along smoothly (without experiencingany speed related problems such as slow response times or bottlenecks). We believethat 12-16 Gb of RAM would be better for smooth, comfortable operation, and necessaryif you plan on using BestMatch V.● If you have never used NaturallySpeaking before, this is the perfect time to start, because Ver. 12 is full of pop-up tutorials and help files to get you up and going.Note: Our customers will also be receiving a complimentary copy of our KnowBrainerTraining Guide which now includes NaturallySpeaking basic, intermediate and advancedtraining.● While Nuance has increased the accuracy in DNS Ver. 12, the end-user can also take amajor step to increase accuracy by using a high-end microphone such as theSpeechWare 3-in-1 or Samson Airline 77.Purchasing Note: If, after reading this review, you are as excited aboutNaturallySpeaking Ver. 12 as we are, you may feel ready to start shopping. Werecommend purchasing NaturallySpeaking and speech recognition peripherals(microphones, digital recorders, etc.) from Nuance certified/licensed VARs (value addedresellers). When you purchase all of your speech recognition tools from a single Nuancecertified source, youre typically dealing with an expert whose combined knowledge ofNaturallySpeaking, microphones, digital recorders, etc...(as well as how they all interactand affect one another) is unparalleled. Purchasing from multiple sources often meansending up with items that either aren’t optimally compatible or aren’t knowledgablysupported. When you purchase from a Nuance certified reseller, you not only maintain16
  17. 17. your right to manufacturer support but additionally obtain an extra layer of technicalsupport from a qualified DNS reseller/trainer. This often includes various otheramenities, ranging from step-by-step installation guides (all but a requirement forVer. 12) to virtual on-site assistance. It is in your best interest to support your localNuance certified reseller.Previous Reviews:If you would like to see some of our previous reviews check out the following:KnowBrainer TableMike Face-OffKnowBrainer Handheld Microphone Face-OffKnowBrainer Headset Microphone Face-OffKnowBrainer Telephone Microphone Face-OffKnowBrainer Digital Recorder Face-OffKnowBrainer Wireless Microphone Face-OffKnowBrainer USB Soundcard Face-Off (coming soon)Current Gold Standards:The following is a list of microphones that we consider to be #1 in their microphonecategories we:17
