Media Studies A2 Advance Portfolio Evaluation
Sophie Bottazzi
In my A2 advance portfolio I decided to create ‘The first two pages of a new local newspaper, together with a radio advertisement for the newspaper and a hyperlinked pages from the paper’s website.’
The reasons in which I chose to do this for my advance portfolio is because the genre of media and the technology of which I needed to use was completely different to what I did during my foundation portfolio and I wanted to create and adapt on other media skills.
Local Newspaper Website
Local Newspaper
In what ways does your media product use forms and conventions of real media products ?
The ways in which I used forms and conventions of a local news paper is by annotating current existing local newspapers and comparing and contrasting common values in which all of the newspaper had. For instance as you can see on my blog I annotated both the local newspapers in my area; ‘The Comet’ and the ‘Advertiser’.
The forms and conventions in which I found in both where;

Headings
Adverts

Forms and Conventions of a local newspaper
Headings
Images linked to the article
Sub Headings
Adverts
Articles in columned paragraphs
Also in my advance portfolio as a team we created a radio advert and a website for our new local newspaper.
The forms and conventions in which we used in our radio advert where;

A jiggle themed song background
Working hyperlinks

In what ways does your media product develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products ?
In our local newspaper we research all the normally forms and conventions, however we wanted our local newspaper to be different in a good way. To do this we experimented with the norms of form and conventions and ‘develop’ and ‘challenged’ them.
The way in which we did this was keeping all the original forms and conventions of a normal local newspaper but developing them with digital media.
For instance we challenged the norms by improving and developing them, examples of this are;

Using coloured and high mega pixel images
Including modern storylines for a younger audience as well as the norm articles

Also in my advance portfolio as a team we created a radio advert and a website for our new local newspaper.
In what ways does your radio advert develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products ?
We created our radio advert on a programme on the Apple Macs called ‘Garage Band’ This software allowed us to experiment with a lot of different sounds.
In our advert we recorded our voices naturally and then developed them by making them sound like a ‘Male radio voice’ and musical instruments.
In what ways does your website develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products ?
Our local newspaper website challenges the forms and conventions by being a modern designed website which is easier to read and less busy. This is also a development as it is easier to access and read for the reader.
How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
As a combination of our main product and ancillary texts we created a...

Local Newspaper as the main product
And both a published website for our local newspaper and a radio advert to advertise it to the public.

The combination of these task work brilliantly and complement each other very well.
For instance as we crated a new local newspaper we needed people to become aware of this. The for both the ancillary task are types of publication especially the advert to make future readers aware of our new local newspaper ‘The Link’.
What have you learned from your audience feedback?
The main audience feedback that we created during our planning and research period was a questionaire which we handed out to 40 people in a local area, of different genders and ages.
The results of this audience feed back where;
Our Analysis of our audience research is that;Our local newspaper must be –· Attractive to 30 - 70 years· It will be published once a week· It will be mainly full of local news within the community· The information within the newspaper will be exciting and interesting
We found this incredibly helpful because as the audience there option was very important to us as a team and these questionaire results helped us created the newspaper we finished with.
How did you use media technologies in the planning and research?
In my planning and research a the technologies I used in the construction of my research where;

A blog site called; www.blogger.com to create my blog which shows all my research on how I created my main task and the ancillary text.
I also used the web page called; www.youtube.com to upload video’s as different sources of research . I did this by searching for a brief of what I wanted the video to be about and then copying and pasting the embed code into my blog which recognises html codes and finally uploads as a video on my blogs page.

How did you use media technologies in the construction?
In my construction the technologies I used in the construction of my research where;

To create our Local newspaper we used a simple programme called word publisher which we had been using since a early age and are very confident in using and creating documents such as A3 Newspapers.
To create our website we used a webpage called; www.yola.com. This website creator was very easy to use. Originally we started to create our website in a webpage called; www.weebly.com , however this site was not as efficient and couldn’t handle the amount of images in which we were downloading onto the website and the layout in which we wanted them.
To create our radio advert we used a Apple Mac programme called; Garage Band which the school supplies for us. To create this we recorded our voices with a input microphone and adapted the contrast of the sound of our voices on the software. When we had finished this advert we transferred it to a iTunes document and then updated it to www.youtube.com to access its embed code to put on our blogs.
