  • Here’s the diagram of our testing setup with the changes I’ve just mentionedThere’s the user in the testing room, and me next to them with my laptop We’re running GTM, and I can monitor that, take notes and IM on my laptop Teams of developers now sit at their desks and watch the test on their own computers through the power of GoToMeeting, while the audio comes through their speakers (hopefully they are wearing earphones so they are not sharing the session with the whole office)
  • The rigs or “sleds” available for purchase online seemed expensive and complicated Some used multiple tiny cameras and required split screen viewing for the picture-in-picture effectWe decided to build it ourselves using equipment and technology we knew how to use already Take a look at the lower left image That’s the Meetup company tripod to which I have taped a paint stirring stick That stick is the platform for a $5 iPhone case that holds the testing phone A clamp on lamp is the anchor for our webcam, which remains in a fixed position above the iPhone The tester sits in from of the rig and can hold onto the iPhone without moving it much in relation to the camera We record the sessions with Quicktime using our webcam, which plays on our desktop in a viewer during the test- We can broadcast our desktop with GTM as we do with a website test to share it with the team in real time- Recordings of the screen and the user’s gestures come out nice and clear, and after awhile you are able to ignore the participant’s knees and feet moving under the camera
