The Hub LA Multi-Pager

Imagine a world where you can walk into a place in every major city and find changemakers
hard at work. A place where scarcity thinking and complacency gives way to a
network of ideas, and where social entrepreneurs co-create, exchange resources, colocate
and help each other succeed.

We believe that there is no absence of good ideas in the world. The problem is a crisis
of connection, scale, resources and impact. People with innovative ideas for change
need access to a ‘just-in-time’ infrastructure, inspiration and support to thrive and
scale.

It felt vital to create this type of place for social innovators to put ideas into action.

 4. 4. RADICAL INNOVATION ECOLOGY
We believe there is no absence of good ideas in the world. The problem is a crisis of using old methods to generate new solutions for people and planet. It is a crisis of connection, scale, resources, and impact. We need new models that blend social and environmental value with economic viability. We need new support systems that resource people with innovative ideas, provide them with ‘just-in-time’ services, and creative space to collaborate. It felt vital to create this type of place for innovators to put ideas into action.
So we created The Hub.
The Hub is the nexus point of entrepreneurship, funding, and mission. It is a place where non profit and for profit social change ideas build and scale into viable enterprises that address the complex problems we face, from poverty to climate change, for people and planet. Change agents find the support they need at the Hub to reach their goals faster, surrounded by a community that makes everyone smarter and more effective. From seed funding to professional services, from mentors to peers who understand what they are doing, the Hub is the platform that helps you make it happen.
It’s where change goes to work.
Come join us at The Hub Los Angeles. From San Francisco and Berkeley to London and Mumbai, innovative thinkers, value-driven entrepreneurs, intrapreneurs, activists, investors, freelancers and mentors go to work together, sharing ideas and resources. They find the people, ideas and tools they need to build and scale their solutions for change. Come be part of it.
H
H
Hub spaces
Design
Hosting
Hub spaces range from stimulating, collision-rich café and hot-desking environments that support innovation, to quiet areas that foster focused concentration, to places where members work the phones for hours pushing their ideas forward. Hubs also feature flexible event spaces for a range of uses from large and small film screenings, art openings, presentations, and participatory meetings.
Our spaces are furnished with sustainable materials that reflect the values of our members. Where possible interiors are built to LEED standards.
Hubs are also designed for access. The planned locations in Los Angeles are along the much anticipated Expo line linked to downtown or along accessible transit corridors. The locations are similarly situated within clusters of innovative
enterprises, and walkable amenities.
As a Hub member, you will have access to diverse, green, and convenient work/meet/event space, along with inspiring community across Los Angeles.
Hub spaces are professionally hosted environments that connect members to increase idea flow and collaboration. Hosts get to know what members are working on, who they are working with and introduce them to the people they should know.
Hosts also work to bring members together for group events and to transform member ideas into new opportunities for the community. Examples include peer-to-peer mentoring, professional consultants, and brown bag dialogues, and facilitated. Hosts also form member working groups around a specific change sector such as local food, environmental solutions, alternative transportation, homelessness, international development, and more.
Most importantly, Hosts respond to members’ ‘just-in-time’ needs for resources, capacity, and expertise.
As a Hub member, you will inhabit an intentionally hosted space allowing you connect, find resources, and thrive in Los Angeles and beyond.
inspiring space designed to unleash creativity, cultivate community and accelerate collaboration
c
s
)
(
t
H
H
+
+
+
=
C
Hub community
Hub spaces
Hub tools
changemakers
8. 8. H
H
Hub community
Network
Events
Hub events investigate how ideas for change are built into viable enterprises that create a better world and new models for how change gets done. Events are curated by both Hub staff, and members who use the Hub platform to convey ideas, opportunities, and operational lessons learned.
An example of event topics explored by the community –
-What are alternative methods of fundraising?
-Who is at the forefront of ethical supply chains?
-What for-profit and non-profit legal structures are suitable for my venture?
The Hub Network connects more than 5000 changemakers working across 5 continents. Members can work in any of our 20+ global locations, while also connecting virtually through a member-based online social networking platform (Hub+).
Our network is growing rapidly across the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia, providing members with productive spaces and amazing community around the world. With the addition of Los Angeles to a growing network of Hub Bay Area, Hub Halifax, Hub New York, Hub Atlanta, Hub DC, and Hub Minneapolis, we are helping members work, connect, and build their networks in some of the most important metropolitan areas in North America.
Over the next several years, we also plan to open more Hubs throughout Los Angeles to link our region despite it’s sprawling geography and connect a local and global community of changemakers.
an intentional mix of members ranging from entrepreneurs, freelancers, artists, funders, students, mentors, and community leaders working to create a radically better world
c
s
)
(
t
H
H
+
+
+
=
C
Hub spaces
Hub community
Hub tools
changemakers
Citiscapes
The Hub community exists within a larger community in Los Angeles. Citiscapes is a concierge program that connects members to specific sectors and stakeholders in the wider Los Angeles area to have impact and be inspired.
This program helps members give back to their local community by developing engagement strategies directly linked to members’ missions and value propositions.
9. 9. H
H
Hub tools
Business Services
Online Collaboration
Hub members need ‘just-in-time’ tools and services to build and scale their ideas. These resources are often inaccessible to rising enterprises and organizations that do not have the capacity to develop comprehensive partnerships and networks. Hub staff and members collaborate to offer easily accessible and highly valuable professional tools and services.
Examples of business tools are legal consultations, member driven consulting on issues of IT, business strategy, branding, and community building.
We are also developing a capital access program to seed beginning for-profit social enterprises. The Hub will also be launching its own Member investment fund – HubCap – in 2011. Stay Tuned!
Many members, as freelancing professionals, are in need of group health insurance, and other benefits often offered by employers. The Hub will help facilitate those pooled resources as another aspect of its member services in Los Angeles.
Members gain access to an online network of Los Angeles and international Hub members. Locally, members can message each other individually or collectively about their latest news, jobs, events, and other useful info. Soon, we will be launching a comprehensive online social network (Hub+) that enables members across the globe to create or join Hub groups, share status, message members, engage in online discussions, create or join mailing lists, view and publish news/events/calendars, and more.
just-in-time office services combined with business consulting; capital access; marketing and social media; and speaker series to accelerate social and environmental change across sectors
c
s
)
(
t
H
H
+
+
+
=
C
Hub spaces
Hub tools
changemakers
Hub community
Marketing Platform
The Hub acts as a marketing arm for members. We feature member enterprises on our website/blog, distribute member news through online media channels, connect members to our media partners, and promote member events to our local network and global network of over 5,000 people.
