Eris Jonathan Ryan Cooper Corrected

 1. 1. ERIS A DWARF PLANET By Jonathan Ryan Cooper
 2. 2. What is a Dwarf Planet?

A dwarf planet is a celestial body which meets the following four criteria:

It must orbit the Sun

It must have sufficient mass that its gravity causes it to be round or almost round in shape

It must not be another object's satellite

It must not have cleared the neighborhood around its orbit

 3. 3. The Dwarf Planets

PLUTO

CHARON

CERES

ERIS

 4. 4. PLUTO USED TO BE A PLANET…
 5. 6. Why is Pluto NOT a planet?

In August 2006, the IAU (International Astronomical Union) voted on a definition of planet:

Must be spherical from its own gravity

Must be in orbit around the sun (not around another planet)

3. Must have cleared its orbital path of debris

Pluto met the first 2 criteria, but did not meet the Third. Pluto's orbit takes it into the Kuiper Belt, which has thousands of small objects (debris). If Pluto were discovered today, no one would even consider calling it a planet because it's clearly a Kuiper-belt object.

 6. 7. Charon – Double Dwarf Planet

Pluto has 3 moons.

Two of them are tiny.

They are called Nix and Hydra.

The other moon is called Charon.

It is much larger than the others.

Charon and Pluto circle around each other locked by gravity.

Some Scientists call

Pluto and Charon

“ Double Dwarf Planets”.

 7. 8. Ceres

Ceres, is the smallest dwarf planet in the Solar System. It is the only one located in the main asteroid belt.

Ceres is only the size of TEXAS!
 8. 9. Eris the Largest Dwarf Planet

Eris is a dwarf planet which lies at the edge of our solar system.

Eris has one moon name Dysnomia.

◄ This is Eris ◄ This is Dysnomia, Eris’ moon
 9. 10. Facts About Eris

Eris is the most recently discovered Dwarf Planet

Eris is the most distant object discovered so far in our solar system

At the farthest point of its orbit, Eris is almost 10 billion miles away from the sun

It takes eris 557 years to complete its orbit around the sun

Photograph of eris
 10. 11. More Facts About Eris

Eris was first detected in October 2003

Eris is a little larger than pluto

Eris is the largest of the dwarf planets

Eris has one moon, named Dysnomia

Eris’ nickname was Xena

The temperature on Eris is -230 C

 11. 12. Eris’ Orbit

The picture below shows the orbit of Pluto and Eris.

 12. 13. Review of Eris

What are the 4 Dwarf Planets?

They are Pluto, Charon, Ceres and Eris.

2. What is the biggest dwarf planet?

The biggest dwarf planet is Eris.

3. How far is Eris at the farthest point of its orbit?

Eris is ten billion miles from our sun.

4. How long is Eris orbit?

Eris orbit is 557 earth years.

5. What is the name of Eris’ moon?

Eris’ moon is named Dysnomia.
