Adding a Quiz: Settings and Defaults
1. Turn editing on
2. Select quiz from the ‘add an activity’ dropdown menu
3. Enter a name and brief introduction into the boxes.
The name will appear on-screen in the course and students will see the introduction when they click
on the quiz.
4. Choose when to open and close the quiz. Leaving these will make the quiz always available
Default: blank
5. Set a time limit for the quiz, if required.

6. Set the following options relating to quiz layout:
Questions per page: Default: Unlimited
How many questions appear on a page (1-unlimited)
Shuffle questions: Default: No
Questions appear in a different order or not
Shuffle within questions: Default: Yes
Answers appear in a different order or not
7. Set the following options relating to marking and assessment:
Attempts allowed: Default: Unlimited
How many times students can attempt the quiz (1-6 +unlimited).
Each attempt builds on the last:
Yes = If multiple attempts are allowed then previous answers are shown.
No = New quiz every time.
Grading method: Default: Highest grade
Choose how the final grade is decided.
Adaptive mode: Default: Yes
In simplest terms the student can retry questions within a quiz and a penalty is applied for each incorrect
answer.
Apply penalties: Default: Yes
If a quiz is run in adaptive mode then a student is allowed t try again after a wrong response. Wrong
answers incur a penalty set in the individual question.
This option has no effect if the quiz is not in adaptive mode.
Decimal digits in grades: Default: 2
If set at ‘0’ grades will be given in whole numbers.
Students may review: Default: All ticked
This option controls whether and when students will be able to review their past attempts at this quiz.

Time delay between first and second attempt: Default: None
Make student wait before attempting the quiz again.
Time delay between later attempts: Default: None
Make student wait before third or later attempts.
8. Choose whether to open the quiz in a secure window. Default: No
This will restrict some functionality for students (with technical expertise) to discourage cheating but is
not watertight.
9. Decide whether you want:
A password: Default: Blank which means none
Students must enter this password for the quiz.
A network address: Default: Blank which means none
Limit the computers allowed to access the quiz.
10. Enable groups or leave as default for all students. Default: No groups
11. Show/Hide the quiz from students. Default: show
12. Save changes.
