Google’s stated goal is to organize all the
information of the world. Google scans the
internet and tries to organize the "bits"
(information) on the internet. The core idea
that Google uses to organize the information
is fairly simple and in fact their lies its
beauty.
Google ranks a webpage based on number of other webpages that link back to the
webpage. So a webpage that is linked to by more webpages ranks higher than one that
is linked by fewer webpages. The idea is simple and relates to our ordinary lives. I call
this "met him, seen her" philosophy. As one becomes more important in society, one
becomes more popular at the same time (that is more and more people come to know
you). So if you can count the number of people who know you, it gives a measure of
your importance to the society.
This is one aspect of google page rank, other aspect is using the ranking of the
webpages that link to a webpage to determine the ranking of the webpage . So if a
higher rank webpage links to your webpage, it means your webpage is more important.
So Google not only counts the links, it also weighs them based on the ranking of the
webpages themselves. This again has a correlation with our ordinary lives. I call this
the "Janta hai mera baap kuan hai" (Do you know who my father is?) philosophy.
Whenever you are in a situation where you have to show your importance (like you are
caught by traffic policemen, or you are wooing a girl or a guy) one starts counting
important people you know. In case, you know important people, your own importance
increase. Thats simple, right.
That is the core idea behind Google search. I dont want out Google down by trivilizing
stuff. I am one of the biggest fans of the company. It is because Google implemented
these simple ideas impeccably and created something so useful and literally changed
our world for the better.

So what Google does is great job of organizing information. However, information is
only bits. It is useful only when it becomes knowledge. Information becomes
Knowledge when it becomes a concept in your brain that can be applied to real life
