Communities and violence• Collective efficacy – Introduced as a construct that might capture the social capacity that deteriorates in communities that have been marginalized and isolated – Deterioration of collective efficacy could lead to violence – Definition: group members shared belief in their collective ability to produce desired results – Encompasses two components • Social cohesion - mutual trust and shared values • Informal social control - willingness to intervene for the common goodBandura 1986, 2001; Sampson et al. 1997
