  • 39. “ The Kingdom of Heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning
  • 40. to hire workers for his vineyard.
  • 41. He agreed to pay each worker one dinar each day and sent them to work in the vinyard.
  • 42. He went out again around the third hour
  • 43. and seeing others idle in the town square he said to them,
  • 44. “ Go you too into my vineyard and I will pay you what is just.”
  • 45. So they went.
  • 46. He went out again around the sixth hour and again at the ninth hour and did the same.
  • 47. Around the eleventh hour he went out again and saw some other men idle.
  • 48. “ Why do you stay here idle the whole day?” He asked them.
  • 49. “ Because no one has hired us.” They replied. unemployed
  • 50. “ Go and work in my vineyard.” He replied.
  • 51. When evening came, the vineyard owner said to his steward :
  • 52. “ Call the workers and pay them, starting with those who came last, finishing with those who came first.”
  • 53. Those who came to work at the eleventh hour turned up and each was given a dinar.
  • 54. Those who came to work earlier expected to receive more but they too were given a dinar each.
  • 55. Upon receiving it, they started to grumble against the landowner saying: “ These last have hardly worked an hour and you have treated them the same as us who have endured the heavy work of day and the heat!”
  • 56. The landowner answered one of them saying: “My friend, I have not been unjust to you. Didn’t we agree on one dinar?”
  • 57. Take what is yours and leave. I want to give to the last one the same as I give to you. Can I not do as I please with what is mine? Why are you envious because of my kindness?
  • 58. And so, the last shall be first and the first shall be last.”
  • 59. The Word of God! Praise be to Christ!
