When evening came, the vineyard owner said to his steward :
“ Call the workers and pay them, starting with those who came last, finishing with those who came first.”
Those who came to work at the eleventh hour turned up and each was given a dinar.
Those who came to work earlier expected to receive more but they too were given a dinar each.
Upon receiving it, they started to grumble against the landowner saying: “ These last have hardly worked an hour and you have treated them the same as us who have endured the heavy work of day and the heat!”
The landowner answered one of them saying: “My friend, I have not been unjust to you. Didn’t we agree on one dinar?”
Take what is yours and leave. I want to give to the last one the same as I give to you. Can I not do as I please with what is mine? Why are you envious because of my kindness?
And so, the last shall be first and the first shall be last.”
