  3. 3. project comparisons AS/400 WebSphere vs. HP/Oracle/Infinite Overview INFINITE Software writes highly specialized programs that let applications written for an IBM AS/400 run on HP systems and modernizes them to operate as users expect. The AS/400 was introduced by IBM in the late 1980s and was designed specifically for business usage where a number of users are accessing the same files and records. It includes a command language that is essentially an extensive library of programmer shortcuts built into the operating system. For example, suppose you are writing programs to do all the various activities involved in payroll -- calculating hours, applying pay rate, determining regular and overtime hours, totaling and issuing pay stubs and checks. An AS/400 programmer can invoke one of these shortcuts in his programs. In contrast, a UNIX programmer would have to write out a very long, complex set of instructions to do those calculations. In moving away from the AS/400 platform, an organization is faced with three choices: purchase a new application, rewrite the current one or migrate and modernize. The first two choices involve a significant investment of time and resources. IBM’s answer to the third choice is WebSphere. INFINITE Software offers an alternative -- migrate the source code to run native on HPUX and wrap it in SOA architecture. You cannot just install programs written for an IBM AS/400 system on another platform (i.e. Windows, UNIX or Linux). The programs don’t know how to talk to the new machine’s operating software and all those shortcuts are missing. INFINITE Software provides an operating environment in which the application code executes a database environment that allows calls to DB2/400 to write directly to Oracle and support for the shortcuts. The AS/400 system has no graphics capabilities, so the applications are presented to the user as text screens. INFINITE tools transform each screen element into web components so the user now opens his browser, puts in a URL address and uses the application. Moreover, these changes allow the old applications to interact with other enterprise applications and the web much as Microsoft office applications do. This solution offers companies considerable cost savings while introducing very little risk. The Infinite solution provides the fastest, most efficient way to move off the AS/400. To illustrate potential cost savings, this document compares two projects to modernize text screen applications currently running on an AS/400 System. The comparisons use a hypothetical 1000 user system. It assumes the end user is considering upgrading the AS/400 and modernizing with WebSphere. Costs used are based on currently available information. Actual results may vary. • Retaining the AS/400 platform, MES upgrade and rewriting the applications in Java using WebSphere versus • Replacing the AS/400 with a comparably configured HP server, using INFINITE Software tools and services to migrate applications and data to HP and replacing DB2/400 with Oracle. 4. 4. project comparisons AS/400 WebSphere vs. HP/Oracle/Infinite Upgrade Summary WebSphere These estimates assume that the enterprise is currently running on an AS/400 (iSeries) that would be upgraded to provide resources for the WebSphere project. Another upgrade is slotted into the end of Year 3 conforming to depreciation and IBM system upgrade cycles. • WebSphere costs are based on rates published in the trade press -- $12,000 per processor and $400 per user. • DB2/400 will continue to be used as the database. • System costs and maintenance are based on recent AS/400 configurations. • Staffing costs are included to support a staff to do in-house development and system and db administration. The overhead/tax burden is estimated at 33% of payroll. • Custom Services and direct costs include training days/costs as stated on the IBM web site, costs for outside project support for design, implementation, test and roll out of the project. HP / Oracle / INFINITE These estimates assume the enterprise will replace the AS/400 with an HP server running Unix (HPUX). Costs are for a new system, comparably configured but a bit larger than the AS/400. An upgrade is anticipated at the end of Year 3 conforming to depreciation and system maintenance rotation. • Costs for INFINITE Software include the development system used to migrate applications and data to the HP system and user licenses. • The estimates assume that there is a current installation of Oracle supporting other applications, an Oracle db and an administrator for the Oracle server. • Staffing estimates assume that current knowledge and resources can be allocated to the new installation and that two programmers will remain on this project. • Staffing estimates assume maintaining staff on the AS/400 project during the 18 month project. • Custom Services and direct costs include training days/costs, costs for outside project support for design, implementation, test and roll out of the project. Both projects assume a system and software to support 1000 users. Copyright © 2007 INFINITE Software. IBM Midrange, AS/400 and OS/400 are registered trademarks of the IBM Corporation. 8. 8. project comparisons AS/400 WebSphere vs. HP/Oracle/Infinite HP/Oracle/INFINITE Project Estimated Costs • The estimates anticipate an INFINITE project of 18 months. • The HP system has been configured to approximate the AS/400, but it’s a bit larger. It is slotted to be upgraded at the end of Year 3. • Oracle costs assume use of current database server and purchase of additional user licenses and corresponding maintenance increase. Actual costs may vary depending on current configuration. • No inflation has been built into the HP system maintenance which is calculated at 25% of system cost. • No inflation has been built into INFINITE system maintenance which is calculated at 25% of license cost. • Staff time includes 5% per year inflation with a corresponding increase in burden. • Service costs are reflected in the years they would likely be used.
