  • Here is the performance management solution that CA offers. You must look at performance from the database perspective as well as from the application perspective. This is required to truly determined what is the problem vs. reacting to a symptom. This family is highly integrated and you can move quickly and easily from subsystem performance information to application performance information to SQL performance information. Database Administration breaks down into the 4 sub areas shown on this slide: Maintenance activities on the objects and databases, data extraction and archive, migration activities, and security. Object and database maintenance activities involves looking into the DB2 catalog to understand what objects are defined and then taking actions on those objects. It could involve creation of new objects (tables, tablespaces, indexes, etc.), updating data in the tables, analyzing and managing SQL in plans, packages, and DBRMs, and managing partitioned tablespaces. RC/Query: Simplifies the analysis and maintenance of the DB2 environment RC/Update: Provides complete DB2 object management and reduces development time by allowing developers to create, copy, browse test tables and data RI Editor: Easy-to-use interface for viewing and manipulating RI related data (RI Editor also uses RI Manager which is discussed below). Package Analyzer: Manages the proliferation of packages and their multiple versions Partition Expert: Automates maintaining partitioned tablespaces Fast Index: Quickly creates indexes for DB2 tables Often DB2 data must be extracted to created test tables that reflect the production environment. In addition, as the size of tables grow, some of the data may no longer be needed on a daily basis. If that data can be archived to a different set of tables or removed from the DB2 system until it is needed again, access to the remaining data is faster as less data must be searched and maintained. The challenge is the that DB2 data is often highly related between tables by referential integrity (RI) relationships or user defined relationships. Unless the proper subset of all the related data is extracted to build test tables or archived together, the relationships between the data will be lost rendering the data useless. Managing Referential Integrity (RI) relationships is a tedious and time-consuming task. These relationships are extremely important for being able to relate data together. For example, a customer table specifies customer information and the order table has customers orders. Relating an order to a customer row in the Customer table is done through our RI relationships. This information is held with in the DB2 catalog and can be exploited by other tools. However relationships which are defined by the user must be captured and maintain as well. This is done using RI Manager, part of the CA Value Pack, and RI Editor. Once captured this information is used by multiple products. RC/Extract: Extracts referentially intact sets of data and provides data archive capabilities. Integrates with Fast Unload and Fast Load for expedited movement of data. RI Manager: Used to create or modify RI relationships (user and system defined). Now in the Value Pack. Fast Unload: Unloads data from DB2 tables Fast Load: Loads data into DB2 tables The migration suite provides significant value to the customer. Migrating objects from test to production or vice versa requires significant details to ensure a proper migration. In addition, if there are any changes to the objects, for example adding an e-mail address field to the customer table, certain utilities must be run to fix the data in the existing tables. Also, many times you will need to compare the format of the database that is in test to the database in production. The migration suite offers a set of products that significantly reduce the amount of time, effort, and human error in migrating DB2 objects. RC/Migrator, RC/Compare and RC/Merger are the three products that make up the migration suite. RC/Merger can move or copy data very quickly compared to other methods. However, the data is not available for access during this process. If you are dealing with the production system, RC/Merger may not be suitable due to this restructuring. RC/Compare: Companion to RC/Migrator, automatically compares DB2 structures and can synchronize the structures RC/Migrator: Automates change migrations in a multi-subsystem environment RC/Merger: Companion to RC/Migrator, allows you to migrate the data along with the objects RC/Extract provides data extraction capabilities and is tightly integrated with RC/Migrator. This integration allows you to migrate both the objects and the data. Many migration activities require that the data be unloaded and then reloaded to apply the structure changes. So Fast Unload and Fast Load integrate with the other products of the migration suite to accomplish this part of the task. One of the final tasks of administrating DB2 is managing the security of the environment. RC/Secure: Simplifies security administration
  • Solution: Planning Complete backup and recovery strategies Ensure repeatable and consistent processes Reduce inconsistencies in backups ensuring recovery Backup processing Secure and complete backups Increase availability with advanced management of incremental backups Recovery Complete recovery analysis optimizing hardware/systems Reduce complexity and error rates through automated recovery execution Complete recovery of data and database systems Backup and recovery solutions must provide quick and secure backups. Since backups are done on a regular basis, the solutions must have minimal impact on your eDatabase. CA’s backup and recovery solution provides the ability to make fast and complete backups. In addition, the solution also provides the ability to combine incremental backups into fully consistent and secure backups without impacting production data. This is done by reading log information and combining that with existing incremental or full backups via Merge/Modify. With eBusiness, recoveries need to be quick and complete. CA’s solutions provide complete recovery analysis and efficient execution. Log Compress allows the DB2 logs to be located on DASD instead of tape. This allows for fast recoveries. Recovery Analyzer is the brains of the backup and recovery solution and automates the recovery process. Application recovery is just as important as disaster recovery in that if an application corrupts data, you need the ability to go in to your database and reverse the bad data. Log Analyzer provides this ability. The key to CA’s backup and recovery solutions is the integration between the products. This integration automates the recovery process and reduces costly downtime. Recovery Analyzer: Generates and coordinates the jobs (could be thousands) to perform a recovery Fast Recover: Performs quick concurrent recovery of tablespaces, partitions and indexes in a single job stream. Quick Copy: Makes high speed backups of DB2 data Log Analyzer: Provides detailed analysis of active and archive logs. You can also create UNDO SQL that will undo a transaction. Merge/Modify: Produces image copies without restricting access to DB2 data Log Compress: Reduces media costs and increases recovery speed by compressing archive logs Fast Check: To check referential structures. In a single pass of the data: check index, check disk, and DSNCOPY check — all without taking the data off line.
  • The value pack drives value into the current licenses by including what was previously licensable tools into the value pack. Thread Terminator, RI Manager, 24x7 are the 3 products that were placed into the value pack. This is provided no additional charge to any client of at least one of our DB2 tools Contents include: Thread monitoring, viewing and termination (Thread Terminator) Dynamic ad hoc and scheduled DSNZPARM changes, active log dataset addition/deletion, and DB2 exit routine replacement (24x7) User defined RI management (RI Manager) Script processing of datasets containing SQL and batch processor commands to dynamically execute DB2 commands, call utilities, perform VSAM functions, and more DB2 command processor provides lists of recent commands, command syntax help, and immediate command execution Interactive SQL editor, syntax checker, access path information, execution and results viewer Alternate Catalog Mapping Facility redirects catalog queries to views defined over the system catalog tables or shadow tables reducing catalog contention and easing security concerns Utility Manager for ad hoc DB2 maintenance activity control by defining a group of objects, collecting statistics and executing maintenance actions if thresholds are met
  • Moving data normally requires moving both the database objects and the data. It can very simple if all you want to do is move one table from one location to another. For example, moving data from a production environment to a test environment. You would just use simple utilities. However, it becomes more complex if you want to move related sets of data and not all the data in the tables, a subset of the related data. Determining all the data to be moved is complex and error prone.
  • Extracting data is normally done so it can be moved into other environments such as a test environment or a reporting environment. Furthermore, the data that is extracted from the production environment is only a subset of data and not all the data in the production environment. This is because the production environment can hold enormous amounts of data and a test environment does not require all that data. However, these environments do require that all the related data be extracted properly. In addition to extracting data, the test environment or the reporting environment must have the objects (tables) defined to hold the data. These objects must also be moved from the production environment.
  • What is related data? Data that is related together has relationships that are dictated by the business. For example, a Customer record can have multiple Order records. Each Order record can have multiple Shipping records. These are all related to a customer. The database records the relationship via system defined Referential Integrity (RI) entries. These entries indicate the relationship between the tables. Extracting RI data is a challenging and cumbersome process. With most tools and manual methods you first have to obtain a data sample from a parent table, then use the parent data for foreign key column values to extract data from child tables. This is further complicated by the complex parent/child relationships that cascade down many child tables and refer back up to parent tables at higher levels. This leads to enormous amounts of time dedicated to data extraction tasks, and increased error rates. Unicenter RC/Extract provides a total solution for extracting RI data. Unicenter RC/Extract reads this information from the database and automatically processes the extraction request based on the RI relationships. Therefore the user does not have to know the relationships between the data. In addition, the relationships may not be defined in the database but maybe managed via the application. This is called application defined Referential Integrity (RI). Unicenter RC/Extract uses Unicenter RI/Manager, now included in the CA Value Pack for DB2 in the P01 release, to manage application defined RI. This provides additional automation for novices to the database design. The main point of this slide is to show the complexity involved in the time involved in extracting data from a database. Most databases have over 100 related tables. This example shows just three.
  • Unicenter RC/Extract automates the extraction of DB2 for z/OS and OS/390 data. It provides both automation and ease-of-use through interfaces and sophisticated extraction engines. It is also integrated with Unicenter RC/Migrator which provides significant benefits for anyone doing data migration. These features cannot be found in any other extraction product in the market today. Note - If you have Data Navigator, you should have already received Unicenter RC/Extract as a no charge replacement to Data Navigator. Data Navigator has been phased out and replaced with Unicenter RC/Extract.
  • Ease of use provides the user with a simple tool to use. However, the user also needs a sophisticated extraction engine that will extract both large and small sets of data, and has advanced rules to provide for extraction conditions that are encountered with large databases. Unicenter RC/Extract provides a sophisticated extraction engine that will reduce the amount of time and errors involved in extracting related sets of data. Without a sophisticated extraction engine, the user will be doing significant amounts of work just to set up the extraction process. Unicenter RC/Extract also provides two methods of extracting data. SQL extraction and utility based extraction. These two methods provide for extracting large and small sets of data. This reduces the over all time involved in Unicenter RC/Extract running and gives greater control to the extraction process. For example, utilities are like dump trucks in that they can move large amounts of material at one time. However, if you're moving a wheelbarrow full of dirt, you do not need the overhead of the dump truck. The SQL based extraction efficiently moves small sets of data. In addition the extracted data can be encrypted to hide sensitive information. By using the encryption built into Unicenter RC/Extract, the encryption process maintains the relationships between the data even after encryption.
  • An important function of Unicenter RC/Extract is its archiving capabilities. It provides a well-rounded set of features allowing users to easily create and manage their archives. Unicenter RC/Extract performs the four primary functions of archiving: extracting the data, deleting the extracted data from the source, restoring the data, and managing the archives. By automating these tasks, Unicenter RC/Extract greatly enhances the users ability to create and manage DB2 archive data.   Unicenter RC/Extract can store the table definitions with the archived data. In this way even if the table definitions are changed the archived data can be restored to a set of tables that match the archived data.
  • RC/Extract is integrated with RC/Migrator. This integration provides the user with the ability to migrate related objects (i.e. tables) and set up the extraction of data for those objects. Migrating objects has similar requirements to data extraction. RC/Migrator understands relationships between the objects in provides a simplistic migration process without having to understand the entire database and its relationships. Leveraging the fact that RC/Migrator provides the migration of the objects, RC/Extract strategies can be built from with in RC/Migrator. This integration allows for a single process to manage the object selection, object migration, data selection, and data extraction. No other tool in the marketplace can provide this level of integration. This integration will save significant time and will reduce the amount of work and errors involved in migrating and extracting related objects and data.
