    • BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF SUBJECT We all communicate. Communication plays a major role in all human activity. It is part of our culture. Within the business community, public and private organisations, and the professions communication is associated with the more specific activities of interacting, informing, instructing and persuading. People who possess demonstrable skills in these activities are employed, prized and promoted. If businesses are to survive in an increasingly competitive and information-oriented environment they will need trained communicators who can speak, write and interact with others efficiently, effectively and professionally. This course is intended to provide participants with an introduction to the concepts and principles of professional business communication and to support the development of their skills in interpersonal, spoken and written business communications through practice and feedback. Course participants will be encouraged to develop a Communication Portfolio that demonstrates their achievement in this course. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES The aims of this course are to:  Introduce students to the theories concepts and processes of communication, and their application within organisational and business settings; and  Develop students' interpersonal, oral and written communication skills at individual, group and organisational levels. CONTENT The four main areas covered in this subject are:  Information literacy  Written communication  Spoken communication; and  Interpersonal communication This subject does not aim to develop skills in the use of electronic communication for business presentations (e.g. Powerpoint). ORGANISATION AND TEACHING METHODS Learning in this subject will be supported by seminars, a web-site, workshops and voluntary personalised learning sessions. In workshops students will be encouraged to apply theory in practice and develop written, interpersonal and spoken communication skills which will be taught, practiced and assessed. The development of the web-site will decrease student dependence on the attendance at lectures. Workshops are associated with assessment and consistent attendance is strongly recommended.

Due 2 weeks after group presentation Weighting: 30% Communication Written Due: Week 11 Portfolio (Stage 2) Communication Weighting: 35% End of Semester Business Exam period examination Communication Weighting: 35% Communications Portfolio (Stage 1) Information Literacy, Spoken and Interpersonal Communication This portfolio will consist of several elements demonstrating achievement of information literacy skills; written communication, bibliographic and referencing skills; group presentation skills and finally skills as a theory-based reflective communicator. 1. Information literacy skills. Pass/Fail Each student is to research a topic of interest that may be Recycle until Pass used in the group presentation. The presentation will be graded pass/fail according to criteria negotiated between the class and tutor. Must pass to pass All students in the workshop will provide written feedback to course each presenter. 4. Reflective Essay 30% Students are expected to present evidence of their personal planning for the group presentation; and a reflective essay that includes:
    • (i) a self evaluation of their contribution to the group presentation; (ii) reflection on the interpersonal dynamics within the group - based within a theoretical framework; (iii) critical reflection on the presentation itself (which may involve reference to other presentations); and (iv) responses to feedback and suggestions for how the presentation might be re-designed and improved. Communications Portfolio (Stage 2) Written Communications Demonstrate a range of written communication styles for a variety of business and organisational settings. It is expected that all students will provide examples of business communications included in the core tasks category. Students who wish to be considered for Credit (C), Distinction (D) or High Distinction (HD) grades must provide evidence of written communication examples of the listed instruments at a satisfactory or superior level. NOTE: submitting examples of all communication instruments does not guarantee a C, D or HD grade; the quality of written communication is related to the awarded grade. Category Communication instrument CORE TASKS Students who wish to be considered for a Pass level grade should provide an example of each of the following business Common communications: Communicatio All students are to provide an example of each of the following n types of communications: Skills  A 1-page memorandum.  A 1-page business letter.  A 2-page business proposal.  A 2-page short report. CREDIT LEVEL Students who wish to be considered for Credit grades should TASKS provide an example of each of the following communication:  Job Application: a 2-page covering letter stressing their Communicatio communication competencies to a potential employer. n Skills ADVANCED Students who wish to be considered for Distinction or High TASKS Distinction grades should provide an example of each of the following communications: Communicatio  Critical analysis (2-pages, doubled spaced) of an article listed n in their annotated bibliography.     • ASSESSMENT RATIONALE/CRITERIA: The purpose of this course is to provide participants with an introduction to business communication and to develop basic skills essential for continuing study. To this extent, they are able to complete the library research tutorial and annotated bibliography exercises as many times as necessary (after feedback) to develop the associated skills in research, summarising and referencing. These skills will be taught, practiced and assessed after feedback. These tasks are graded as Pass/Fail/Recycle. Recycling enables a developmental learning process that allows students to resubmit until they achieve a pass. It's considered reasonable that students must eventually pass a Pass/Fail/Recycle piece to pass the course. Presentation skills are also graded Pass/Fail/Recycle to de-emphasise competition and encourage a collaborative and supportive peer environment. Certain criteria for the oral presentations will be negotiated between the tutorial group and tutor. These criteria may be slightly different between groups, but will contain a common core. Students must pass the group presentation exercise to pass the course. Essential written business communications have been identified and form the core requirements of the assessment of these skills. Students can choose whether to focus on improving these basic skills or to extend their repertoire of business communications by attempting more challenging written formats. GRADING CRITERIA: High Distinction (HD) Exceptional performance indicating complete and comprehensive understanding of the subject matter; extremely high abilities to reflect on, analyse, plan and critique interpersonal, oral and written communication; exceptional demonstration of abilities to write in a variety of styles in a business context; exceptional achievement of all major and minor objectives of the subject. Distinction (D) Excellent and very high level of understanding of the subject matter; demonstrates excellent abilities to reflect on, analyse, plan and critique interpersonal, oral and written communication; excellent demonstration of abilities to write in a variety of styles in a business context; excellent achievement of all major objectives and minor objectives of the subject. Credit (C) High level understanding of subject matter; demonstrates high level abilities to reflect on, analyse and plan interpersonal, oral and written communication; high level demonstration of abilities to write in a variety of styles in a business context; high level achievement of all major objectives of the subject; some minor objectives not fully achieved. Pass (P) Satisfactory performance indicating an adequate understanding of most of the basic subject matter; satisfactory demonstration of abilities to reflect on, analyse and plan interpersonal, oral and written communication; satisfactory demonstration of abilities to write in a variety of styles in a business context; basic achievement of all major objectives of the subject; failure to achieve some minor objectives. Pass Conceded (PC) – awarded at the discretion of the Assessment Board Limited performance indicating partial understanding of basic subject matter; some evidence of abilities to reflect on, analyse and plan interpersonal, oral and written communication; partial demonstration of abilities to write in a variety of styles in a business context; achievement of most major objectives of the subject; failure to achieve some minor objectives. Fail (F) Unsatisfactory performance indicating an inadequate understanding of the basic subject matter; failure to reflect on, analyse and plan interpersonal, oral and written communication; unsatisfactory demonstration of abilities to write in a variety of styles in a business context; and failure to achieve major and minor objectives of the subject.

    • ADMINISTRATION: Subject Evaluation This subject will be evaluated through surveys run by the School in accordance with University and Faculty policy. Submission of Assignments Assignments should be submitted according to the Subject Convenor’s instructions by the due date. All students should keep a copy of their assignment until it is marked and returned to them. Assignments should be kept until a final grade is awarded. Extensions Extensions may be obtained by consulting the subject Convenor. Requests for extensions are usually made in writing, and accompanied by appropriate documentation to support the case for the extension. Late Submission of Assignments Requests for an extension of time for submission of an assessment item must be lodged before the due date for the assessment item. Requests received on or after the due date will only be considered in exceptional circumstances. Extension requests must be made in writing to the Subject Convenor, and be accompanied by appropriate supporting documentation. Where an extension has not been granted, an assessment item submitted after the due date will be penalised as follows: the mark awarded to the item will be reduced by 5% of the maximum possible mark for each day that the assessment item is late. Each weekend (from Saturday and Sunday) will count as one day. Plagiarism / Academic Misconduct Students must conduct their studies at the University honestly, ethically and in accordance with accepted standards of academic conduct. Any form of academic conduct which is contrary to these standards is academic misconduct for which the University may penalise a student. Specifically it is academic misconduct for a student to:  present copied, falsified or improperly obtained data as if it were the result of laboratory work, field trips or other investigatory work;  include in the student's individual work material which is the result of significant assistance from another person if that assistance was unacceptable according to the instructions or guidelines for that work;  assist another student in the presentation of that student's individual work in a way that is unacceptable according to the instructions or guidelines for that work;  cheat; (Cheating is dishonest conduct in assessment);  plagiarise; (Plagiarism is knowingly presenting the work or property of another person as if it were one's own.) On determination that academic misconduct has taken place, the penalty which may be imposed on the student is one or more of the following: a. a reduced or nil result for the assessment item affected by the academic misconduct; b. a fail grade for the subject in which academic misconduct occurred; c. exclusion from enrolment in the course for a specified period; d. exclusion from the course; readmission to the course is at the discretion of the Faculty based on consideration of the student's case for readmission. Where a student has been found guilty of academic misconduct on more than one occasion and has previously been penalised as set out in above a. - c., the penalty shall normally be exclusion from the
    • course as set out in d., unless in the opinion of the relevant Assessment Board there are mitigating circumstances.
