Required Text: Locker, Kitty O. and Stephen Kyo Kaczmarek, Business Communication; Building Critical Skills, McGraw-Hill Irwin, 2000. Requirements: • Attend every class, start to finish; be on time; and participate actively in discussions. • Read assigned module before appropriate class • Submit all writing projects on deadline • Pass quizzes, complete in-class assignments • Final exam (format to be determined). Big Idea: • We shall run the class on a business, rather than an academic, model. This applies to attendance, professional courtesy, preparation, participation, performance, attitude - and grading. .
  2. 2. 2 Polish Your Prose: Grammar exercises at the end all 30 modules (including those not covered in class) are your individual responsibility. Each student writer will be assigned a grader. Submit answers to the even-numbered questions to your grader. Doing this weekly is highly encouraged, though each student should reach an agreement on timing with the grader. Graders are to check and return answers and discuss any disagreements with the author. (Serious disagreements may be addressed to the instructor.) Graders are also responsible for writing a memo on the performance of the student writer discussing correctness, timeliness, neatness, etc. and assigning a grade for the project. The memo will be given to the student writer and submitted with the 30 assignments at the end of the semester. Written work: Some written work will be submitted by e- mail. When it is returned you will be asked to resubmit the work with appropriate changes in hard copy. Submit such assignments electronically by e-mail, in both embedded plain text AND a word document attachment. In the subject line, as the title of each attachment, use your name and the number for the assignment. For example: Malapit-1 would be the first assignment from Mr. Malapit. Tanaka-2 would be Ms. Tanaka’s second assignment Schedule: In-class writing and take-home exercises will be assigned on a weekly basis. The schedule is subject to change with little or no warning. Updates will be issued periodically.
