This tutorial was given at the Society of Genealogists on 1 August 2008. It covered the basics of getting started with The Master Genealogist (TMG), including setting up options, entering data, linking families, project explorer / picklists, finding, searching and sorting. Additionally more complex scenarios is covered, including importing and exporting data, and changing or customising narrative sentences. Also the tutorial includes how to use the companion tool Second Site to publish your TMG data in HTML format to include it on the Web, or share your data with family members on custom CDs.

  • How many have heard of TMG? How many use it? Version ? Thousands of users are happily using TMG v5, this new version v6.0 is fully functional and strongly recommended. An upgrade fee is required.
  • Distinguishing Features of the UK Edition When the UK customisations are installed, The Master Genealogist takes on the following distinctive characteristics: The splash screen and Help>About screen say "UK Gold Edition" or "UK Silver Edition". An additional "language" called "English (U.K.)" is installed automatically and selected by default. It reflects UK spellings and phrases on the screens and menus. Five new UK-oriented timelines are automatically installed.    UK parish timelines    UK Census dates    G.R.O. dates    British Prime Ministers    British History The internal spell checker supports 200+ additional UK spellings. The state/province abbreviations, web place information, and web mapping features are updated to support Chapman codes. Use Microsoft Word's spelling and grammar checker as an alternative to the built-in spell checker.

  • Second Site - Six easy steps:
      • Start the program Second Site (available from http://www.johncardinal.com) TMG should not be running when you use Second Site.
      • Make a “Site Definition File” Use the File > New... command to make a new Site Definition File (SDF). Second Site stores the options you select to customize your site in this file. Select "English - Standard" at the "Read default values from:" prompt.
      • Identify your TMG database Click the [Set Database...] button in the Data > Database section, navigate to your TMG database in the File Open dialog, and click [Open].
      • Give your site a name Key a title in the Pages > Site.Title textbox. Fill in the other textboxes in the Pages.Site section if you want.
      • Identify yourself Key your name in the Pages > Compiler.Name textbox. Fill in the other textboxes in the Pages > Compiler section if you want. You should enter an e-mail address if you want site visitors to be able to contact you.
      • Make the site Use the File > Make Site command to make the site. When Second Site is done making the site, a window will open with some status messages and some command buttons. Click the [Browse Site] button to open the main page of your site.

  • Citations Change Citations changes a reference from one source to another source while also setting the citation detail (CD). It can be used to consolidate sources or make other changes to source citations.
