This presentation will be given to the Guild of One-Name Studies (GOONS) at the Guild Computer Seminar in Epsom, Surrey, England on August 7, 2010

This session covers the basics of using TMG including setting up options, entering data, linking families, project explorer / picklists, finding, searching and sorting. Additionally it will show how to create narratives, and family trees. The tutorial also includes how to use the companion tool Second Site to publish your TMG data in HTML format to include on the web, or share your data with family members on custom CDs.

  • Distinguishing Features of the UK Edition When the UK customisations are installed, The Master Genealogist takes on the following distinctive characteristics: The splash screen and Help>About screen say "UK Gold Edition" or "UK Silver Edition". An additional "language" called "English (U.K.)" is installed automatically and selected by default. It reflects UK spellings and phrases on the screens and menus. Five new UK-oriented timelines are automatically installed.    UK parish timelines    UK Census dates    G.R.O. dates    British Prime Ministers    British History The internal spell checker supports 200+ additional UK spellings. The state/province abbreviations, web place information, and web mapping features are updated to support Chapman codes.   • Short cuts, pick list, etc Expanded Abbreviation fields Link a single research task to a person AND an event AND a source AND a repository Citation Reference field Each event participant can have a specific name variation associated with the event. Use Microsoft Word's spelling and grammar checker as an alternative to the built-in spell checker.
  • Standard flags are: SEX, LIVING, BIRTH ORDER, ADOPTED, MULTIPLE BIRTH, ANCESTOR INTEREST, and DESCENDANT INTEREST.

  • Second Site - Six Easy Steps:
      • Start the program Second Site (available from http://www.johncardinal.com) TMG should not be running when you use Second Site.
      • Make a “Site Definition File” Use the File > New... command to make a new Site Definition File (SDF). Second Site stores the options you select to customize your site in this file. Select " EnglishUK - Standard " at the "Read default values from:" prompt.
      • Identify your TMG database Click the [Set Database...] button in the Data > Database section, navigate to your TMG database in the File Open dialog, and click [Open].
      • Give your site a title Key a title in the Pages > Site.Title textbox. Fill in the other textboxes in the Pages.Site section if you want.
      • Identify yourself Key your name in the Pages > Compiler.Name textbox. Fill in the other textboxes in the Pages > Compiler section if you want.
      • Make the site Use the File > Make Site command to make the site. When Second Site is done making the site, a window will open with some status messages and some command buttons. Click the [Browse Site] button to open the main page of your site.
