  • 2. Editable Poly Editable poly – five sub-object levels  Vertex  Edge  Border  Polygon  Element The poly objects faces are polygons with any number of vertices 2

Advantages Editable poly options  Transform or Shift-Clone selection as with any object  Options supplied on the Edit rollouts  Pass a sub-object selection to a modifier higher in the stack. To convert object to editable poly: Quad menu > Convert to Editable Poly Modify panel > Choose Convert to: Editable Poly. 3
  • 4. Command Buttons Command button – provides specific command or function to apply Two ways of using the commands  Direct manipulation  Interactive manipulation Note: Some buttons, such as Flip, operate on the mesh immediately, with no viewport manipulation required. 4
  • 5. Show End Result Show end result – Command Panel -> Show end result toggle Enables you to see the result of all modifiers while editing on lower level 5

  • 7. Selection Rollout Selection rollout contains  Buttons for accessing sub-object levels  Display Settings  Information about selected entities Object level commands  Sub-object level commands 7

Selection Rollout Sub-object level buttons  Vertex – Turns on Vertex sub-object level  Lets you select a vertex beneath the cursor  Region selection selects vertices within the region  Edge – Turns on Edge sub-object level  Lets you select a polygon edge beneath the cursor  Region selection selects multiple edges within the region 8

Selection Rollout Sub-object level buttons  Border – Turns on Border sub-object level  Lets you select sequence of edges that borders a hole in the mesh  Border edges have faces only on one side of them  Polygon – Turns on Polygon sub-object level  Lets you select polygons beneath the cursor  Region selection selects multiple polygons within the region 9
  • 10. Selection Rollout Sub-object level buttons  Element – Turns on Element sub-object level  Lets you select all contiguous polygons in an object  Region selection lets you select multiple elements 10
  • 11. Selection by vertex Selection by vertex  Select sub-objects by vertices they use  By clicking on a vertex all objects using it are selected 11
  • 12. Ignore Backfacing Ignore backfacing  When on selection of sub-objects affects only those facing you  When off, region selection includes all sub- objects, regardless of the direction they face 12
  • 13. Selection Transformation Shrink - reduces the sub-object selection area  Deselecting the outermost objects  If selection size cannot be reduced, the remaining objects are deselected Grow – expands the sub-object selection area  Adds the closest outward objects to the current selection For this function, a border is considered to be an edge selection. 13
  • 14. Selection Transformation Ring – expands an edge selection  Select all edges parallel to the selected edges Loop – expands the selection as far as possible in alignment with selected edges Ring and Loop applies only to edge and border selections 14
  • 15. Selection Information Selection information – text display  Information about current selection  If zero or more than one sub-object is selected, the text gives the number and type  Else the text gives the identification number and type of the selected item 15

  • 17. Soft Selection Soft selection controls  Apply smooth falloff between selected sub- objects and unselected  Partial selection value  Affects  Move function  Rotate function  Scale function  Deformation modifiers 17
  • 18. Soft Selection Curve Soft Selection Curve – Graphically displays how Soft selection will work  In the center of the X axis is the direct selection  The partial selection will be affected with force depending on the Y value of the current object 18
  • 19. Soft Selection Parameters Edge Distance space  Edge distance – Edge Distance spinner  Distance in edge count Absolute Distance space  Absolute distance – Falloff spinner  Distance in current units Pinch spinner – affects the curve of the effect 19
  • 20. Soft Selection Parameters Bubble spinner - Sets the relative "fullness" of the region  Expands and contracts the curve along the vertical axis In older versions of 3D Studio Max is displayed only the right symmetrical half of the Soft selection curve 20
