Crisis of Confidence•  FY09: Value of Brown’s endowment dropped by nearly 30%•  Endowment income accounted for approx. 15% of the operating budget•  Five-year plan (FY10-FY14) called for $100M of increases to support critical academic priorities

Immediate Response•  Hiring “pause” and some staff cuts•  Salary freeze for FY10•  Review of all capital projects and renegotiation of large utility contracts•  Slowed growth of faculty and of Graduate School•  New five-year plan to return to financial balance by FY14; required reductions of $95M over five-year period

Organizational Review•  Launched in October, 2009, with representatives from faculty, staff, and students•  Goal of the Project: •  Identify opportunities to deliver services more efficiently and effectively in support of academic excellence •  Streamline business processes •  Reduce staffing required to support administrative services and processes •  Enhance revenues
