  2. 2. <ul><li>My name is Tea Horvati ć </li></ul><ul><li>I am a teacher from Croatia. </li></ul>
  3. 3. WHERE IN CROATIA? <ul><li>I teach English in a small village school only 3km away from the city of Čakovec. This is a suburban school and has the same name as the village – Primary School Strahoninec . </li></ul>
  4. 4. OUR SCHOOL <ul><li>The school has 3 27 students : </li></ul><ul><ul><li>15 7 in lower grades (ages 6-10) and </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>1 70 students in upper grades (ages 11-14) </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Currently I teach English in grades 2, 3, 6 and 7 . </li></ul>

ENGLISH IN CROATIA <ul><li>English is taught from the first grade and students are quite successful in speaking English. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>In Croatia students start learning English when they start primary school at the age of 6, and it’s compulsory. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Some students start learning it earlier, in kindergarten or in private language schools. </li></ul></ul>

CROATIA <ul><li>It is a small country in central and southeastern Europe of 4,6 million inhabitants. </li></ul><ul><li>We have four seasons : </li></ul><ul><ul><li>cold winter, warm spring, hot summer and cool autumn. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Our school is: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>in the north part in the town of Čakovec </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>in Međimurje region </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>only 30km away from Slovenia and Hungary. </li></ul></ul>

HISTORY <ul><li>Croatia was part of former Yugoslavia </li></ul><ul><ul><li>until independence in 1991 </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Our history reaches way back </li></ul><ul><ul><li>to the 7 th century  </li></ul></ul><ul><li>T here were many different rulers who left their trace </li></ul><ul><ul><li>especially Austrian-Hungarian Empire until 1918 </li></ul></ul>
  10. 10. <ul><li>T here are lots of wonderful architectural pieces from the Roman remains to baroque churches and modern ones. </li></ul><ul><li>Coloseum in Pula </li></ul><ul><li>the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb </li></ul><ul><li>baroque church in Varaždin </li></ul>
  11. 11. <ul><li>The town of Varaždin is very famous for its buildings as well as being a capital in the past </li></ul><ul><ul><li>it has annual festival “ Š pancirfest” which attend people from around the world just to have fun and feel happy. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>It is very interesting to see it and it is only 10km from our town so we go there often. </li></ul>TOWNS NEAR OUR SCHOOL

CROATIAN INVENTIONS <ul><li>we are famous for inventing a tie “kravata” </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Croatian soldiers wore them, Louis XIII loved them and made them popular </li></ul></ul><ul><li>a pen (Eduard Penkala) </li></ul><ul><li>a torpedo (Ivan Lupis – 1860) </li></ul><ul><li>a parachute </li></ul><ul><ul><li>constructed by Faust Vrancic – 1617 </li></ul></ul><ul><li>zeppelin </li></ul><ul><ul><li>f irst invented by a Croat and sold to mr. Zeppelin) </li></ul></ul><ul><li>electricity (Nikola Tesla – 1892) </li></ul><ul><li>mp3 player (Tomislav Uzelac – 1997) </li></ul>

FUN FACTS <ul><li>In 2009 we held World Men's Handball Championship </li></ul><ul><ul><li>and Croatian team came second. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>The White House was built out of </li></ul><ul><li>Croatian stone </li></ul><ul><ul><li>from the island of Brac </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Dalmatian dogs come from </li></ul><ul><ul><li>the Dalmatian coast, Croatia. </li></ul></ul>
