The beginning1970The founding shareholders, Nigel Taylor and John Patterson, first meetwhen employed by a major international insurance brokers. They workedtogether for 10 years becoming the regional directors responsible forfinancial planning and pension management for the North West.1979Nigel left to establish Taylor Patterson and was followed closely by JohnPatterson in the May of that year. The business initially began tradingabove a shop in Kirkham and moved shortly afterwards to the businessarea of Winckley Square, Preston.
The early days1980Taylor Patterson recognised as an Inland Revenue Approved PensioneerTrustee.1981A new company was established to develop general insurance services forthe clients of Taylor Patterson. This initially developed through directmarketing and the acquisition of a small number of brokers and thegeneral insurance accounts from professional firms.
Development1983–1989As part of the drive to develop the business, a number of joint ventureswith local professional firms were entered. This included:•Taylor Patterson Green Ltd, providing mortgage and insurance servicesto all the offices of Entwistle Green Estate Agency•Taylor Patterson Lonsdale Ltd, providing financial services in Cumbriafor clients of Lonsdale & Partners, Chartered Accountants.•A new venture, Taylor Patterson Edlington Ltd was also started inSheffield with a colleague to provide financial services in the City andSouth Yorkshire region.
Expansion1989As the business expanded it purchased thepresent office Lanson House, Winckley Gardens.1990Due to many changes in regulation within thefinancial services industry, the group has beenconsolidated within TPA providing servicesthroughout the North West of England.1997Taylor Patterson approved as a SIPP Manager. Recognition and Restructure2000The group is recognised as an Investor in People and has maintained acontinuous programme of training for higher qualifications available to allstaff. As well as a commitment to remaining totally independent there isalso a commitment to improving the quality of services available toclients and the quality of staff employed within the group.2003As part of the continuing expansion of thebusiness and the varying regulatory requirementsof the Financial Services Authority, the companywas restructured into a group of companies.
Continued expansion2004The formation of a group of companies provided a structure to expandspecialist services and develop a new management team – Gillian Bardin,Glynn Bartley, Phil Rogers and Robert Cholmondeley.As part of this process a business plan was developed providing the newteam the option to acquire a shareholding on a rolling programme toeventually obtain control of the business and therefore ensuring continuityfor the future.The first stage of the business plan was completed in 2004 with themanagement team acquiring an initial 10% of the issued share capital.
Chartered status & SIPP provision2006It was agreed to accelerate the programme with the team now controlling55% of the issued share capital. The change in shareholding also includeda reorganisation of the wider management team with Nigel Taylor asChairman and Gillian Bardin as Managing Director.2007Due to changes in legislation, Taylor Patterson could now be its ownSIPP provider. Approval from the FSA was obtained in April 2007which has resulted in Taylor Patterson developing its range of SIPPproducts.2008Awarded the professional Chartered Financial Planners certification.
Commitment to strong management2010Awarded the prestigious Chartered Insurance Brokers designation by theChartered Insurance Institute (CII).2011Launch of a senior management programme to develop ‘directors of the future’.Five individuals were appointed associate directors to undergo a two-year trainingprogramme. The move reflects the company’s commitment to strong managementand a desire to establish the next generation of directors to grow the business. Changes for clarity2012The group structure was changed so that the Taylor Patterson Group hasonly one advisory business (Taylor Patterson Financial Planning willprovide all our Independent financial advice to clients) and one specialistpension business (Taylor Patterson Associates will continue to provideour SIPP & SSAS to clients).We believe this change makes our group structure clearer to all our clientsand is more relevant as a result of regulatory changes required by theFinancial Services Authority’s Retail Distribution Review.
