Socratic Seminar Guidelines Socratic Seminar Guidelines Presentation Transcript

    • Socratic Seminar Guidelines
    • Socratic Seminar Guidelines
      • Inner circle discusses courteously
      • Listen carefully
      • No hands necessary, let the discussion guide itself (use sensitivity to take turns and not interrupt others)
      • Relate your insights/opinions to the text
      • Be courageous in presenting your own thoughts and reasoning, but be flexible and willing to change your mind in the face of new and compelling evidence
    • Guidelines (continued)
      • Ask each other to elaborate or clarify if necessary
      • Remain focused and on task
      • Address each other, not me
      • No side conversations
      • Outer circle participants can be drawn into the discussion by inner circle members for a single question or point. Raise hands to contribute.
      • Hot seat?
    • Questions
      • Literal questions: summary-ish
        • To get us started
      • Interpretive questions
      • Prepare several questions in advance (should be open-ended, reflect genuine curiosity, and have no “one right answer”)
        • Questions should lead participants into the core ideas and values and to the use of the text in your answers
    • Grading
