What To Do If A Baby Is Drowning

  1. 1. 1 Safety First <ul><li>Keep Calm </li></ul><ul><li>Check it is safe to proceed </li></ul><ul><li>Carry baby to a safe place if necessary </li></ul><ul><li>Place baby on a firm surface </li></ul>
  2. 2. 2 Check Responses & Shout For Help <ul><li>Gently stimulate the baby </li></ul><ul><li>If baby cries, check for injuries </li></ul><ul><li>Reassess at intervals </li></ul><ul><li>If no response shout for help </li></ul>
  3. 3. 3 Open The Airway <ul><li>Lift chin with one finger </li></ul><ul><li>Only tilt the head back a little with your finger </li></ul>
  4. 4. 4 Check For Normal Breathing <ul><li>Look for the chest to rise </li></ul><ul><li>Listen for normal breathing </li></ul><ul><li>Feel for breath on your cheek for up to 10 seconds </li></ul>
  5. 5. 5 If Breathing Normally <ul><li>Cradle baby on its side keeping its head down and mouth open </li></ul><ul><li>Telephone 999 or 112 for help </li></ul>
  6. 6. 6 Give 5 Rescue Breaths (if not breathing normally) <ul><li>Seal your mouth over the baby’s mouth and nose </li></ul><ul><li>Blow gently for 1 second </li></ul><ul><li>Give 5 rescue breaths </li></ul>
  7. 7. 7 Give 30 Chest Compressions Follwed By 2 Rescue Breaths <ul><li>Place 2 fingers in the centre of the chest </li></ul><ul><li>Press down 1/3 depth of chest at a rate of 100 times a minute </li></ul><ul><li>Give 2 rescue breaths </li></ul>
  8. 8. 8 Repeat 30 Chest Compressions Follwed By 2 Rescue Breaths <ul><li>After 1 minute, if not already summoned call 999 or 112 </li></ul>
