      How to Use PBWorks
    • WIKIS – PBWorks
      Go to http://pbworks.com.
On the “FOR PERSONAL” drop-down menu, choose “Sign up now”.
    • WIKIS – PBWorks
      Think of a suitable URL.
      Agree to non-commercial terms.
Pick a screen name and enter your email and a password.
    • WIKIS – PBWorks
      There are TWO privacy settings.
      Who can see it?
Is this a public website for anyone to find and look at or PRIVATE, just for you and selected others?
      Who can edit it?
All PBWorks users or just you and selected others?
    • WIKIS – PBWorks
      There are TWO editable areas
      WORKSPACE
The pages which contributors can add to, edit, change, erase, etc.
      COMMENT SPACE
Like blog comments, these are outside the normal body of the wiki pages. They are uneditable once posted.
    • PBWorks – Main Menu
Main menu is along right side.
      ACTIONS
      Add pages
Upload files (.doc, .ppt, .xls, etc.)
      See all pages and files
      Change wiki settings
      Search pages for specific word/phrase
    • PBWorks– Main Menu
      SIDEBAR
An editable region, like a page.
      Used to create NAVIGATION
      Same on every page
      Link to pages/folders/files
On large wikis, show sections by linking to folders
      ADD CONTRIBUTORS
By email, have to have signed up to PBWorks already
      RECENT ACTIVITY
See what your group mates have done.
    • PBWorks– Pages, Files, Folders
      PAGES
Editable web pages you create inside the wiki
      FILES
      External files you upload
      FOLDERS
Allow for additional organization, grouping of pages and files
    • PBWorks– Pages, Files, Folders
PBWorks includes many “template” pages. To use these, you can click on one from this menu and customize it, then link it in through the sidebar or an in-page link.
Delete them if you don’t think you’ll need them – they are clogging up your page list!
    • PBWorks – Basic Page Editing
Click EDIT to start editing a page.
      Through this view, you can
      • type content,
      • paste content from Word,
      • format the text on the page,
      • add links to internal wiki pages or external web pages by highlighting the text and choosing
ALWAYS REMEMBER TO CLICK SAVE!!!! Not just when you’re done, but once in awhile. There is no auto-save feature!
    • PBWorks – Basic Page Editing
On all pages EXCEPT the FrontPage,
use the page menu (on right when in edit mode) to:
      • RENAME a page
      • DELETE a page
    • PBWorks– Adding Links and Images
From the page menu on the right side you can also:
      • add links to pages inside your wiki
      • add images to the current page
      • Upload files and then click file name
      • From URL (image web address)
    • PBWorks– Embedding Maps and Video
Click SOURCE to embed maps and videos.
      In the source view,
copy and paste the “embed” code from Google Maps or YouTube.
If you don’t know HTML, it’s best to insert the code at the end!
Click “SOURCE” again to go back to regular view.
You won’t see the map/video until you SAVE.
    • PBWorks– Embedding Maps and Video
If you’re unfamiliar with HTML code and/or have trouble embedding a map or video, another option is to just copy the link into the regular view. When you save it goes live.
You won’t be able to see the media in the wiki, but you can click on the link to open it in a new window.
    • PBWorks– Page History
THE MOST IMPORTANT LINK FOR SUCCESSFUL COLLABORATION:
From the non-edit view (“VIEW” tab), you can access the previous versions of the page.
    • PBWorks– Page History
If one of your group accidentally erases valuable information from your wiki…
      …you can:
      • Compare two versions of the page
      • Click on the Date/Time to see any previous version
      • Restore a previous version and replace the current version
      • Delete any version (careful!)
