Question #9:Research shows
that participation in corporate
wellness programs is lowest
among the lowest-paid and least
healthy workers. How can these
programs be made to benefit all
employees?
Programs that benefit all
2
• Promoting program uptake among the lowest-paid and least healthy
workers is essential
• Companies can ensure equitable access by:
− Making healthy foods in the cafeteria more affordable
− Organizing free company-wide activities, such as lunchtime
walks
− Subsidizing interventions that come with a cost (e.g. exercise
facilities, smoking cessation classes, etc.)
− Making extra efforts to target this group
− Working actively with contractors who hire part-time workers to
encourage their adoption of wellness interventions. Research
shows that when large companies encourage
suppliers/contractors to promote health and wellness (and also
provide tools/resources to do so), contractors are more likely to
comply

choose nutritious foods through low-cost, healthy
meals and information about eating well
− In all on-site Novartis cafeterias and restaurants, the
healthiest meal is also the cheapest meal on the menu
− Some sites hand out free, healthy snacks such as fresh
seasonal fruit to encourage better eating habits
