  • 1. a global vision for software testing To quickly recap the history of Software Testing, usage of the term "bug" to describe a defect has been a part of engineering jargon for many decades, perhaps even from the times of Tomas Edison. In software testing it always refers to September 9th, 1945, when the first real bug traced an error in the Harvard Mark II, an electrome- chanical computer. This history is usually connected with the name Grace Murray Hopper, who described this event in the computer log. (see picture: The First "Computer Bug" ). Shifting the timeframe to the second decade of the 21st century, we find that softwareBrief on TCL & Zappers testing is one of the most in-demand careers and is a full-fledged practice in its own right, not to mention a major pre-occupation with many top CIOs. Like software devel- opment, Software Testing has undergone its fair share of phases and maturation processes, new methodologies and buzz words have arisen ever few years. When Software was delivered as a service (SaaS), so was Testing (TaaS), and as Cloud Computing became the next big thing so did Cloud Testing and then we have Agile testing and so on. Of course there is outsourcing of the testing efforts. Currently test automation and crowd-sourcing of testing services seem to be occupy- ing the center stage. TCL is a specialist consultancy in software testing. As a company, our core purpose is to Develop and Deliver World Class Solutions in Software Testing that are Innova- tive, Structured and Professional. Originally founded by Stewart Noakes at the begin- ning of 2000, the company exists to meet the needs of our clients who strive to ensure that their IT projects create value and demonstrate return for their investment. We are geared to deliver services in all areas of software testing including functional, non functional and process improvement. Research has proved that outsourcing application testing can deliver a range of bene- fits and also help to embed quality as a strategic competency in customers’ busi- nesses. Realizing cost savings of 25% or more can be achieved through: Use of a specialist independent testing supplier; A clear financial and business case as an essential baseline; A business-driven structured testing methodology; And the discipline of performance measures to ensure providers really deliver. • 2. a global vision for software testing This approach, which Forrester describes as “a much more ‘activist sourcing’ ap- proach”, can resolve the problems associated with not having an independent Software testing Services Provider. Contracting a single vendor to provide both development and testing can reduce sup- plier management costs, but it is unlikely to deliver the best business value. A devel- oper may have a interest in completing testing quickly or in finding fewer errors, and is unlikely to have the same degree of expertise as a dedicated testing provider. Using a specialist provider for testing gives IT leaders the clear reassurance of an in- dependent auditor with no vested interest in completing testing too quickly, or in find-Brief on TCL & Zappers ing an encouragingly small number of defects. TCL is a privately owned and privately funded company that operates in alignment with a strong vision model. The company vision has shaped our recruitment, clients and delivery since inception. Our financial independence has helped us to maintain our focus even during difficult periods of growth and delivery demands. The first TCL company was based in the UK (Transition Consulting Limited) and the group has now expanded to include enterprises in the US and India. A further expansion into Austra- lia or New Zealand is expected within the next five years. As part of our vision we have a strong commitment to the future of our industry and the community in which we work. This commitment is seen through our scholarship programmes at universities in the UK and USA along with our peer sharing events like Zappers (Conducted in multiple locations across US, UK and India) and Star Testing (yet to come to India).
