J: Three predictions – extrapolate from what is already happening – growing in 2010. Rahzeb will talk about the basis of the predictions.. The WHY... I will talk about the IMPACTS
R:
R: Three premises for this prediction based on 1 content explosion (user generated content, dynamic content, etceteras), 2. Business need for BETTER MT output, and most of all of course 3. the fact that the barriers to make this happen are coming down.... How? Three main factors:Shift to and availability of open source MT systems, i.e.....moses, ...Availability of data (TMs accumulated over two decades of TM usage), or web-based content aligned...And very important... The training & customization of new engines is becoming easier and faster and turns eventually even into a cuistomer self-service operation.
J: indeed... Training a new LP engine used to take two years and an investment of 1 to 2 million. Now it’s down to 1 month, 1 week...What is the impact of this? We go from generic LP to domain-specific engines. Do the math... Say 50 business languages times 20 industries domains.... 1,000 MT systems... And more...Buyer – companies can translate a lot more content into many more languages – same budget. LSP – find new areas for specialization, may even start training MT engines themselves, prepare data, cleaning data, tweaking and improving engines, terminology harmonization for domains. Smaller LSPs may specialize more. Develop post-editing practice. Change pricing models: move to hourly rates, subscription or retainer-based pricing.Translator – the wide availability of not-perfect MT will stimulate the demand for high-value more creative translation work. Shift from locale to culture: culturally and stylistically adapting to customer groups. And be open to post-editing... (remember the introduction of TM in mid eighties)Technology providers – end of lock-in models > open collaborative. Expect new entrants in the translation space. Integration (convergence) with speech technology, support & knowledge base technology.

R: Sharing TMs. Why? Because it just makes perfect sense:Awareness of benefits. Not only the TDA pilot projects. Also for instance SDL blog. Leveraging increases 35% to 50%. MT output quality improves 50%. Terminology more accurate and more consistent and unified.Zeitgeist... Is is the sign of the times: web 2.0, social networking. Reciprocity as a general principle of human civilization and evolution. Sharing is good...Examples are everywhere:Translators market places reviving? MyMemory, Translators Workspace...Academic....EC funded projects: Flarenet, Let’s MT (Tilde)TDA
J: of course this is a small revolution... It raises some fundamental questions for:Buyer – assessing the opportunity cost - do I destroy my investments when I share? Will I get more out of what I already have? What is my return? And how long does it take? What we see is that the hidden TMs are generally not so good. Sharing helps to improve quality. Protectionism leads to losses. Once products are published the content is public anyway....LSP – Just like buyers, LSPs may be naturally inclined to protect the TMs that they have built up over years. Same threat though: their translations will become less efficient and run the risk of losing accuracy and quality. Can’t ignore... Reference Google Translation Toolkit, etc.Translator – Generally less concerned and more open to sharing, helping each other.Technology provider – Translation tools, editors and workflows will all have connectors to shared TMs. Standards are at last being followed....
R.:
R.: TM technology has ruled in the translation industry in the past two decades and basically did not change very much. This year we will see a big change. TM will compete with its sister MT. The gap will become narrower when TM tools adopt new features that we at TAUS label as Advanced Leveraging:In-segment leveragingStatistical routinesLinguistic intelligenceCorpus-based leveraging instead of just updating manuals....As a result we will see productivity increasing significantly.In line with our second prediction, we will also see TM technology moving to a web/based environment. TM will be in the cloud. Leveraging will be happening in the cloud...
J.: Yes, this is a big change for the translation industry of course. TM technology has not evolved as much as other technologies because it would have affected the margins too much in a word-based pricing market place. The introduction of AL and the move to the cloud will trigger big jumps in productivity. The impacts are:Buyer – end of lock-in models, increased flexibilityLSP – challenged to differentiate and excel in new areas…Translator – learn to work in a web-based collaborative TM environment, huge increases in productivity. Changes in pricing.Technology provider – drive towards new features to improve quality, accuracy and productivity of translation. For instance: semantic search, speech-to-text (old dictation software), collaboration technology…
J.: In summary…. Change is not something people in general like very much. The predictions that we present are significant and have often raised the fear that this is the end of the translation profession. We think that all of this is very positive:Growth – the market will grow much faster and we will help the world communicate better. Translation will have a much bigger impact on the world. Innovation – the level-playing field will force everyone to focus on new areas, attracts new users and customers. Stimulates demand for more creative translation work.Convergence – “translation out of the wall” will attract new entrants in the market place – integration, convergenceVibrant industry – leads to a continued evolution of one of the oldest industries in the world.
