  2. 2. Goal of Language Teaching and Learning <ul><li>Communicative competence: </li></ul><ul><li>Expression, interpretation and negotiation of meaning , involving two or more people or between a person and a written text. </li></ul>
  3. 3. Language tasks should enhance <ul><li>Awareness of one’s culture and identity. </li></ul><ul><li>Awareness of and respect for cultural diversity. </li></ul><ul><li>Openness, flexibility, tolerance to other people’s culture and difference. </li></ul>

Culture reflects the whole of human behabior <ul><li>Beliefs, customs, traditions, values. </li></ul><ul><li>Ways of relating to each other. </li></ul><ul><li>Manners of speaking, communicating. </li></ul><ul><li>Ideas and attitudes towards philosophy, politics and environment. </li></ul><ul><li>The material products of physical effort, ingenuity, and imagination and services provided. </li></ul>

Intercultural <ul><li>Cross-cultural communication is a study of a particular idea or concept within many cultures to compare one culture to another in one particular aspect. </li></ul><ul><li>To deal with the ‘foreign’ culture without changing or adapting oneself. </li></ul><ul><li>It is externally directed and a behavior-change issue. </li></ul><ul><li>Intercultural communication involves interactions among people from different cultures: it means some sort of ‘sensitivity and undersstanding’. </li></ul><ul><li>To internalize the values of the ‘other’ culture and learn from it while trying to adapt oneself to it. </li></ul><ul><li>It is internally directed and a mind-change issue </li></ul>

Main Issues When Teaching Intercultural Awareness through EFL <ul><li>English as a foreign language and culture carrier (not only teaching the language but also the values and skills attached to it). </li></ul><ul><li>Wrongly assumed that a good command of a foreign language directly leads to the understanding of the foreign culture and the socio-cultural values that the linguistic form carry. </li></ul>a
  8. 8. <ul><li>Culture is necessary for a good understanding of language and language is necessary for an effective understanding of culture. </li></ul><ul><li>Language serves both global and local needs. As Anne Pakir (1999) stated in the IATEFL Conference </li></ul><ul><li>“ One should be globally appropriate and culturally relevant.” </li></ul>b
