  • My blog was the best accidental business decision I ever made I started a personal styling business in 2008 and the website that was created for me was on a Wordpress blogging platform
  • July 2008 - started blogging October 2008 - created an email newsletter October 2008 - started a Facebook business page May 2009 - joined Twitter Early 2010 - started researching a blog re-design April 2010 - launched re-designed blog and branding May 2011- 1000% growth in traffic; two national blogging awards; extensive national media coverage and interest from brands January 2012 – the blog became the business; stopped one-on-one consultations May 2013 – Unique visitor numbers to the blog doubled in 12 months; agent engaged to sell sponsorships to brands; business turnover increased 40%
  • This is the biggest advantage of hosting a blog as part of your business Think of your blog as home base. Other social media activity connects back to that home base Where once you needed a massive marketing budget to get your message out there; now small start-ups can get their message to potential customers using a blog and social media. You can be the first to commentate on news within your industry. You can build your credibility as an industry expert through that commentary and how you add value and advise your potential customers. This in turn can lead to interviews in mainstream media, which can raise your profile and customer base further.
  • Your blog is your social media space. It’s not owned by anyone else and not subject to changes and updates – unless you make them. Choose and use the social media networks that best fit your business and customer base and link them back to your blog.
  • Easy to use Easily customised through the use of plugins (these are like apps) Huge range of themes (templates) available to use or customise Stable When self-hosted, you own your publishing platform, not Google (as is the case with Blogger)
  • Add on a blog to existing website OR Use a blogging platform for your entire website
  • These five principles should be at the core of any content which you publish on your business blog. You are still selling but you’re selling through value-adding. You are helping your potential customer before they’ve even purchased from you. You are offering a way for that potential customer to connect and attach themselves to your brand before they’ve even purchased from you. The selling then is organic. They want in to your brand and they will be loyal.
  • Consistency is more important than frequency Minimum should be once a week Work out how many posts you can comfortably write a week and stick to that schedule Publish on the same days and times each week.
  • Mix up the type of content Words, photos, videos, podcasts, webinars Think about what will work best for what you are selling and who you are selling to Work with what you most feel comfortable with
  • You can’t just do a Kevin Costner in Field of Dreams… build it and hope they will come Talk to your customers where they are hanging out Comment on other blogs Answer comments on your blog Share other people’s content
  • DO blog for your business Blog in the same online space as where you have information about your business Content is king Be consistent in the frequency and amount of content you add Connect with your customers/readers
  • Social media speaker, blogger and strategist I am a consultant, coach, mentor and speaker and work with companies and executives to optimize their online personal and company presence and brand with digital marketing and social media through the use of social media channels and other web and mobile technologies. This blog is about all things to do with Social Media and Online Marketing, including Twitter, Blogging, Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and inbound and content marketing. The blog’s focus is to assist business in “Getting Found Online” in a digital world and making your company successful. I have a degree in Commerce and Economics and have spent most of my career involved with Information Technologies, Telecommunications and the Web Industry. Through my business career, where I have built companies from scratch, I have used marketing media such as  mass media, with newspaper, TV, direct marketing ( letterboxing, fax broadcasting, and direct mail). I have also promoted via trade shows and spent ten’s of thousands of dollars for floor space and stands and got very little in return. I have also done countless hours of cold calling that were part and parcel of building a new and or existing business which has become less effective over time as call centers on the other side of the world try and interupt your life with ..the latest mobile phone offer. So with all this marketing clutter we are switching off and hanging up,  literally .
