Innovation through Technology: Easy ways to harness the power of technology in your small business, even if you're not tech-savvy.

The world's most successful businesses are harnessing the power of technology.

Regardless of the size of your business, you too can use all the cool technology tools to generate leads, to communicate with clients, to fine-tune business proceeds and even to manage virtual teams. And, you can do it EVEN if you're not a computer geek.

Suzi Dafnis, James Tuckerman and Rebekah Campbell joined us on 28 March for the Innovation through Technology webinar, sponsored by Optus Business. These three presenters revealed ways that you can easily put technology to work in your business, quickly and without having to learn the ins and outs of computers and programming

  • ANNA: Need to add twitter tag
  • SUZI NOTES: How are businesses forging successful new paths.
  • SUZI NOTES: 25,000 people, 2,600 speakers, interactive and new media and technology and innovation. Launch of great businesses. Jennifer Pahlka's keynote wrapped up SXSW Interactive 2012 in the best way possible: with a call to action. Though government and technology may not be the most obvious pairing to the the sxsw crowd, Pahlka's team at Code for America is trying to convince smart, creative people that there IS in fact money in government tech. Not only that, but improving government processes benefits everyone.
  • The combination of mobile + social + local is a powerful, yet misunderstood, communication channel. When people hear about it, they often conjure up a “Minority Report” world where companies track their every move to... Social – aspect of using social with your business regardless of industry. Mobile – people access information on devices – are you set up for this Location – what role does location play wehtgher you ’re a location based business or not We have the technology – now what do we do with it? Applies to Cloud, Apps, Social Media etc. We ’ll look at examples across these areas.
  • Do I need to create proprietary software or can I use something that ’s there. Canyou use Google Docs etc. or not?
  • SUZI NOTES: Local - Location is a big trend. Where am I and what is important for me to know? There are tools such as foursquare - still gaining momentum as well as local directories e.g. True local, or Yelp which just started. Foursquare – you check in to a place and get points. More than that is what is around me that is worth knowing about? Example – Business owner vs Brand/eing helpful. We ’ll talk about gamification later. YELP What is Yelp?Yelp is an online urban city guide that helps people find cool places to eat, shop, drink, relax and play, based on the informed opinions of a vibrant and active community of locals in the know. Yelp is the fun and easy way to find, review and talk about what's great — and not so great — in your world.
  • SUZI NOTES: Social – What is it that people like ME are doing and enjoying? foursquare makes the real world easier to use. We build tools that help you keep up with friends, discover what's nearby, save money and unlock deals.
  • SUZI NOTES: Many small businesses discovered. But, you don ’t need to be a retail outlet to benefit. I discovered them because Friends suggested (Social) It was on my mobile! Local – it depended on where I wsas Corcoran Group – real estate, offer tips about business.
  • SUZI NOTES: How have you used technology to innovate and forge new paths? It ’s ironic that our speciality lies in the world of print and yet we fully embrace the digital movement. We have adapted to demand and expectation for electronic books and online marketing initiatives. Everything we create needs to be transferable online – we merge the offline and the online. What technology do you consider most important to your business success? Social media! This allows us to engage with our consumers and interact with them and figure out what they want and need from a brand. Social media has changed the face of marketing; it is no longer about being sold to, but rather finding out what people want. TREND: Social – Using social to connect with customers.
  • SUZI NOTES: Social media has become an integral component of Lorna Jane's marketing strategy. We have utilised our online tools to innovate and provide our customers with engaging and rewarding experiences. MOBILE SOCIAL
  • SUZI NOTES: An example includes the interactive digital mirror system, SocialEyes, installed within three of our Lorna Jane stores. Customers were invited to snap a photo in a Lorna Jane outfit which uploaded directly onto the Lorna Jane Facebook page, with over 225,000 fans at the time (we currently have over 300,000 Facebook fans). This allowed our thousands of women to share their outfit advice, assisting the customer with her purchase. The customer was also rewarded with an instant instore offer, driving retail sales. This is just one of many ways we have forged new paths to deliver engaging social media initiatives. SocialEyes technology, developed by Brisbane-based Five Faces, is the company ’s latest attempt to communicate the bricks-and-mortar retail experience with their online community. In November of last year, the first interactive display systems were unveiled in the Chermside, Sydney and Melbourne stores to the fitting campaign of “FOLLOW MY LEAD.”“Lorna Jane will be the first retailer to put the SocialEyes system in their retail outlet, and we look forward to working with an inspirational and innovative brand like Lorna Jane to provide this new social experience to their customers,” said Yazz Krishna, founder and CEO of Five Faces, in a press release. The SocialEyes interactive display system enables customers to take photos of themselves via a reflective digital mirror, which then sends the photo to the Lorna Jane Facebook page to be shared with the community.Customers tag themselves in photos taken in-store and share them in the ‘Strike A Pose’ album.  Participating customers receive a code word that give them instant in-store rewards and entrance into a drawing for a $250 Lorna Jane wardrobe. This LCD digital mirror is the first to be implemented by an Australian retailer.
  • SUZI NOTES: Red Balloon - both online and offlineYou can buy a voucher at targetYou can get online and order something The experiences are mostly offline. What technology do you consider most important to your business success? Our analytics tools are fundamental to our success as a business, as they provide valuable insights into what is and isn ’t working for our customers – and the customer experience is at the heart of everything we do. Google Analytics provides us with holistic views on trends, whereas KISSmetrics produces insights on our individual customers. Productivity enhancers and time savers are constantly under review. In August last year, all full-time RedBalloon employees were rewarded for a hard year ’s work with an iPad. The reason for this was two-fold: 1) to reward the team for an exceptional year’s growth and 2) to encourage sharing and saving time and trees. iPads are a powerful tool we can use when using our desktop setup is not convenient – be that responding to emails during the daily commute or pitching to a potential supplier or corporate client. It means we can do business right there and then. We have a very strong mobile work culture here at RedBalloon and believe in the importance of creating virtual workplaces for our employees. MOBILE – equipping team with iPads SOCIAL – Facebook as a customer experience tool
  • SUZI NOTES: Shoes of Prey is a website where women can design their own shoes. A suite of divine raw materials, including the softest leathers, snakeskin, fishskin, Italian silk and more in an array of candy-store colours await the most vivid imagination and make for hours of shoe-designing bliss. Possibilities include flats and heel heights from a comfortable 1.5 inch heel to the the truly glamourzonian 4.5 inch heel. SOCIAL MOBILE – can ’t see that BUT, they are using their own technology. And that ’s allowing them to innovate.
  • SUZI NOTES: What technology do you consider most important to your business success? Our 3d design technology is, without doubt, the most essential technology to our business. What is your favourite technology? There are too many to list! But, if I think about my day-to-day in the business, I would be lost without the Google suite of products. Gmail, Gmail chat, Google Docs, Calendar, Picasa. Then additionally, Dropbox, Skype, Ommwriter and OpenOffice make my life very easy.
  • SUZI NOTES: Open Shed is a peer-to-peer rental site, where Australians come to rent each other ’s personal belongings with confidence. At Open Shed, we are using an online platform to connect people and help facilitate an offline meeting and exchange. Essentially, Open Shed enables people that need “stuff”, such as a drill for a once off DIY project, to search and find someone in their area that is happy to rent them a drill for just the time they need it. What technology do you consider most important to your business success? Right now, I would say the combination of high quality, low-cost services available in the cloud makes it possible to bootstrap a start-up as we have done. Heroku and the great open source software in the Ruby community has had the biggest technical impact on delivering. What is your favourite technology? Open Shed ’s non technical Co-Founder, Lisa: iPhone Google Apps Hootsuite Open Shed ’s technical Co-Founder, Duncan: Github Google Apps Ruby OPEN SHED - Ruby on Rails as our web framework, which was chosen because of its fit for web development, vibrant community and ground up support for test driven development OPEN SOURCE
  • SUZI NOTES: Christine Butcher Hair Romance was in fact born from having all those haircuts. I had a job in a big company where I became famous for never wearing my hair the same way twice. People would come from other departments, sometimes other floors to look at what I had done that day. At first I was indignant. I wanted to be known for how well I did my job, not for my hair. However, in 2010 I decided to embrace it and so began my online odyssey. The job didn ’t survive though! USING ANOTHER ’s PLATFORM Take a blog - Use a tool to drive traffic.
  • SUZI NOTES: Drives traffic. Uses a social platform. Available on mobile. Social – I follow your board and share and repin
  • SUZI NOTES: A non related way to get people to know what we do.
  • James: Do we need an example?
