Business owners will test different messages to the market and different offers, and often when they launch a new product they’ll give it a different brand name. Whilst this helps a business owner learn what works and doesn’t work along the way it really dilutes the opportunity for a business to build brand awareness. So often when we start working with a business the first thing we need to look at is the businesses brand and how it’s positioned. To really understand the perceptions of a businesses brand.
  • Survey monkey is a great tool for conducting research which is an important part of the marketing process. We use survey monkey constantly. Conducting research for cleints on brand perceptions, perceived benefits differentiation to help us with positioning. We also use it to: Get feedback on cold unresponisve leads Get feedback from past clients who aren’t using us? Conduct surveys on SME’s and what they are doing from a marketing point of view – helps us design products and services as well as generate data for presss releases etc. Important to know what you are doing re survey design. You will need to have your own list. An incentive will help with generating responses particularly if you are trying to get responses from the general public (people you don’t know). The free version gives you 10 questions per survey and up to 100 responses. Beyond that there are various levels you can subscribe to
  • You can now have brand, identity and communciation tools done more cheaply than ever, by anyone all around the world. 99 designs – is a design competition site. You post a competition and how much you are willing to pay the winner, designers submit their entries, you shortlist/provide feedback until you’ve decided on a winner – you only pay once you are happy. Elance, freelancer and odesk – allow you to post a brief for a job and then
  • Other tactics that you can easily implement online
  • Search Engine Optimisation is a must for any business. It is actually quite simple to optimise your site for search engines but it is a neverending process.
  • Search Engine Marketing again – is good way to market your business online.
  • I believe that SEO AND SEM are a great partnership and work well together.
  • Video is shown to be more compelling content to visitors to your web site than text. Use video to help build trust. Here we use video testimonials of people who have been to one of our DIY group workshops.
  • Events again build trust – much like this one is. Using a service like gototmeeting you can easily set up your own webinars. We invite people to attend via facebook, twitter and our database. We also record the webinar and upload it to social networking site slideshare – leverage that content via our newsletter and web sie.
  • Dont’ forget about email marketing. It’s now easier than ever to set up your own professional email marketing campaign. We use a very cost effective tool – mailchimp. Great reporting
  • We’ve touched on social networking –however, it’s a definent must for most business. If you are not sure whether you can effectively maintain social media activity consider advertising.
  • If you are active on facebook – you could really maximise your effectiveness by using facebook apps, to run sweepstakes, competitions or referral campaigns. There are a number of sites that allow you to cost effectively and easily create your own apps to run a professional competition of your site.
  • A good customer relationship management system will help you maintain good relationships with clients and prospects and help you measure the effectiveness of any marketing activity. These days many integrate with systems like google apps etc. Here are just some – almost all offer free trial versions for you to use which are easily configured.
  • Regardless of anything that you are doing - it’s more effective if there’s a proper strategy behind it.
  • So how do people find businesses? Do you really think people are looking in the Yellow Pages?
  • When was the last time that you used the Yellow Pages? I know in my house, they don’t even make it in the front door – straight to the recycle bin Here are some other creative uses for the Yellow Pages. The Yellow Pages is a business in decline. It’s is becoming obsolete/irrelevant.
  • Your customers are searching, locally, online for your solutions
  • So if you’re not coming up in Google, then you don’t exist.
  • It wasn’t that long ago that the Yellow Pages was how everyone got found. You looked at all the ads in the Yellow Pages, took a shot and called a few builders.
  • Then along came computers and the Internet and one of the first online directories - Looksmart
  • Then the computers became more powerful and a little company called Google appeared, alongside a host of other online directories to put you in contact with Bob
  • These days, even the online directories are become irrelevant and people are simply Googling for businesses directly. Google is even a verb now – “Just Google it” and everyone knows what to do, so you see it’s important for your business to access those people who are “just Googling it” right now..
  • It’s not enough to have a beautiful looking website. And this is where many website development projects fail. Too much time is spent on the beautiful graphics and Flash and flying widgets, when what Google sees…. Is this..
  • This is how Google ranks your site. It’s complex and it’s based on your site being optimised for certain keywords, but it’s also not as simple as just ensuring that you have the right metadata and no Flash.. It’s complex…
  • Local search is where people use long tail keywords to search for your business – such as “bondi accountant” or “north ryde lawyers” – these people are HOT leads as they’re looking for your services right now.
  • So how to get started? Google Places is the #1 place for local search marketing on the Web, and it&apos;s largely free. Google Places gives your business visibility to potential customers even if you don’t have a website. More than likely, you have seen Google Places listings recently when you have searched for services or products in a specific city. People performing these types of searchers are HOT buyers and they want to buy locally. Google realized this and has slowly transitioned Google Places into a powerful tool for local search. Google Places displays listings as ranked by a mathematical formula (algorithm). So your business may not always appear on the same keyword search or in same order or even in the same category day-to-day.
  • Business Name Represent your business in the exact same way that it appears offline. Save taglines, phone numbers or URL’s for their appropriate place. Inclusion here might appear as an attempt to manipulate results. Business Location Location appears to plays a key role in the places algorithm. Follow these guidelines carefully: Use the exact same street level address that you should have listed in the footer section of your website. Consistency is key. Keep in mind that this needs to be a physical address, not a P.O. Box. One listing per physical business location – even if you operate in a larger service area. Don’t worry - you can designate your service areas separately. Do you have multiple specialties in the same office? Create a listing for your offices and a separate listing for each practitioner. According to Google’s standards this should not appear manipulative. Remember, this is about trust and consistency across many different information sources, if your address is somewhat rural or miles away from a city’s “epicentre” postcode you might be tempted to list just the city name. Multiple business locations? Create listings for each!
  • Website &amp; phone Also know that you should not select the “verify listing by phone” option if you use an automated phone system. Google’s system can only provide your verification PIN to a live person or voice mail. Categories Here is where your keywords will come into play. Keep in mind that Google Places categories should say what your business IS, not what it does. For example: If you are a law firm that is your category. Not “personal injury lawyer.” Google will provide category suggestions – you can override these and create your own but inclusion of location keywords will appear as an attempt to manipulate the listings. Get as specific as you can within categories. Say you have a book store, try to choose a specific category like &amp;quot;college books store, &amp;quot;comic books&amp;quot;, &amp;quot;used book store&amp;quot;, &amp;quot;new books&amp;quot;, or &amp;quot;rare and antique books&amp;quot;. Also, check and correct listings for your business on citation sites such as TrueLocal, and YellowPages.com.au because Google aggregates information about your business from other website to determine under what categories and for what keywords your Google Places business listing appears.
