The old media or legacy media are traditional means of communication and expression.

Social media are primarily Internet-and mobile-based tools for sharing and discussing information among human beings.

Internet has taken the world by storm in the past 15 years.

Newspaper circulation continues to decline rapidly (27 October 07; www.nytimes.com)
Dead Trees Timber! Newspaper circulation falls again (28 April 08; www.forbes.com )
Scottish newspapers in crisis (15 May 08; www.news.bbc.co.uk)
Herald and times group suffers big circulation falls (06 Feb 09; www.theguardian.co.uk)
San Francisco chronicle faces threat of closure (25 Feb 09; www.theguardian.co.uk)

Number of people who trust the recommendations of other consumers =
78%

Number of people who trust advertisements = 58%

Social Networking sites are more popular than Porn sites.

Number of Bloggers worldwide= 184 million
Bloggers in China = 42 million
Bloggers in US = 26 million

The mainstream media world-wide are blogs and as a collective rival any traditional media, 73% have read a blog.
57% of people online have joined a Social Network.

Rise in internet advertising = 70.2% = £2.8bn

Digital Natives, aged 16-24, who had broadband in their homes claimed that they would miss the internet (47%) more than TV (41%).

So, if our consumers are on line than what does that tell you ?

Yesterday = Print media
Today = Traditional + Social media
Tomorrow= Social Media

YouTube hits = 6,876,524 times so far

Not one recipe or formula that fits in every situation,
Not one size fits all approach.
BUT
There is an important lesson to be learnt here, if your consumers are on line, it’s best to reach them online.
Traditional media is slowly becoming history.
