*Why I chose to do a Hip-Hop Music Magazine? * I had chosen to do a hip-hop magazine as it resembles the young rhymic generation of today, and it is of the similar age group to me , also the answers of my questionnaire suggested that , most 16-24 year olds prefer a hip-hop magazine as it resembles them and they said it’s the only music genre that relates to them and they like the upbeat rhythm to the music . Left Third- The left third contains the main feature article (Exclusive interview or ‘Puff Piece’), as this is the core part of what may be inside the magazine.
Main Image- the main image is the central image which helps , to attract readers and is usually associated with topic in the magazine
Strap line - under the masthead , helps give a insight of the magazine without turning a page
Pug- can either be at the top left or/and right-hand corners of the front cover. The prices of the paper, the logo or a promotion and helps catch the reader attention.
Date/pricing - usually are there to show what time period the information has come from and the monthly issues also the date.
Coverlines - The essential articles inside the magazine are stated through sell lines, these are regularly seen at the right hand side of the cover.
Barcode- shows the importance of the retailer, is scanned when sold, also these little details add to the professional look
Website - Extra form of advertising, and widens the audience , gives more information which the magazine does not.

Comparison to a “The Source” Magazine - Front Page Amplify – Front Cover The Source - Magazine
Masthead – both masthead’s are bold and bright , Amplify’s masthead : large bright orange and white and dark black stencil font draws the audiences attention due to the colour contrast and use of underlining. The shadowed , 3 – dimensional looks makes it stand out in the magazine rack. In comparison to "the source” magazine which is all in bold capital letters and the shadowed effect makes the masthead stick out from the magazine and thus attracting people to buy it.
Bar Code- adds to the professional look , I am trying to pursue in order to make this a successful hip hop magazine.
Pugs - are the ears of the magazine and on top left and attract the readers attention, and intentionally ,buy the magazine for the freebie’s.
Exclusivity - Words such as “exclusive” are in capital and bold to stand out of background. Also the fact the interviews are EXCLUSIVE they are grabbing the typical 16-24 year olds ,attention because every one wants the first to know about what's happening in the music industry

Font – The contents page font resembles the font on the front cover . This is a continuity within the magazine as the theme is continued thought out my magazine. Also I feel that this font is simple ,bold and gives off a cool trendy look .
Overall Layout - Instead of having columns like many hip-hop magazines , I engaged the audience by changing the layout into a basic more trendy mosaic layout . As you can see instead of a having my text in columns I have it in small colourful boxes making it more clear and colourful , resembling the care free, youthful lifestyle which many stereo-typical aspirers have. Therefore when people see real media products which resembles their lifestyle and there essence they tend to buy it. I delineated my contents page so that it was easy to navigate to get to a certain page , also I have separated the different categories into smaller coloured boxes , which are easier to use instead of looking through lots of texts in columns and the bright and bold colours help divide the sub headings from the page titles.
Main image – My main image is on the right hand side of my contents page, as would it be in a typical hip-hop magazine . I designed my layout so it matched the outline of real music magazines. In the main image, the model is smiling, even though I wanted to pursue a hard core look on my front cover , by having my model looking more serious and having a male model .However I wanted to create a more fun – loving atmosphere on my contents page where it would appeal to both genders ,thus increasing my sales. Also because I wanted to make my magazine more original and not be too hard core because it would put off people buying my magazine, and in doing this is I have caused my magazine to look more diverse.

Kerrang - Magazine Comparison to a “Kerrang” Double Page Spread Amplify - Magazine I believe that the image on my double page spread relates to the image on the Kerrang magazine , it resembles the hip – hop genre by the way the model poses and stands , in a relaxed and toned down way this helps the reader get into the mood, for sitting down and taking their time to read the article, also the urban wall background, presents where the typical 16-24 year old would normally “chill, or hang out” in their spare time.
Exclusivity – the fact that my double page spread clearly states that my magazine is exclusive and that other magazine has not got this interview, it would encourage people to read my magazine as they would be the first to get the update on the latest music buzz , about what's happening in the music industry.
Photography – the model in the left third of my double page spread, it standing tall, straight and his hands are in his pockets which most teenagers do, also he is wearing designer brands such as “Henley's”, this also acts as a from of advertising which would encourage people to buy the clothes which the model is wearing as they would aspire to become or be like them and so would in turn dress like them and idolise them.
Q1.In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS? I believe that my media product which in this case is a music magazine develops the codes and conventions of real media products of the same category rather than challenge it because it follows the codes and conventions of real media products, and I have developed my flat plan in order to create in my opinion a good hip – hop magazine which hopefully would appeal to the 16-24 year old audience. I have demonstrated my use of knowledge by using the codes and conventions, used in real music magazines and have altered my magazine so it fits within the same category. I chose the name “Amplify” as I believe it resembles the hip-hop genre , as hip hop music is usually loud, rhymic and noisy , also because its is associated with music , its means to turn up the volume and to amplify your life, and by reading my magazine you are getting the latest insight of what's new and upcoming in the music industry and , amplify is like turning your life up a notch. Another reason I used “Amplify" as the name for my music magazine was, that is resembles the typical 16-24 year old age group is about, turning from a teenager into a young adult and in sense , you are turning up a level and are open to a whole new widespread world in the music industry, moreover the aspirers which my magazine is targeted at are usually “wanna – be’s” , which follow the trend in terms of what is “cool “ and “in", and by amplifying your life you are making it more exciting and adventurous. I have also used the left – third to attract aspirers to buy my magazine, as I have included top list celebrities which are usually popular among the typical 16-24 age group who are into the hip- hop genre , also by adding the fact that its "exclusive” the reader will be the first to know about there favourite celebrities and therefore alter their lifestyles and idolise them, e.g. if a celebrity has certain diet secret, young aspirers will change there diets to become like that celebrity. As I have mentioned before the left hand third is the left side of the magazine which sticks out for the magazine as they are stacked vertically and my top-list celebrity exclusive interviews will stand out amongst the rest and will, hopefully persuade people to buy my magazine.
Q2. How does your media product represent particular SOCIAL GROUPS ? The social groups that are represented in my media product are people in the “typical 16-24 year old” category range because ,the majority of male readers which is biased against females, to solve this I used a variety of images which resemble the 16 – 24 year old age group but in a way which appeals to both genders. My hip-hop magazine portrays a mixture of multi – ethnic readers. The 16-24 year old category are usually “heavy spenders” e.g. buy the latest gadgets such as iPods, concert tickets and designer clothes. They use social networking sites such as twitter,facebook and my space, they are more interactive and use their spare time surfing the web, are normally involved in hip-hop music in any type of shape or form e.g. listen to hip hop music or dance to it etc. In general terms they speak,talk,walk and breathe hip-hop, also money to make a fashion statement is never the issue, as they always get what they want. The type of people who would by my magazine would usually be- C2- Skilled manual workers (The type of people that may work for the week in order to spend money made for the weekends) and D – Semi-unskilled manual workers (May need to get other person to buy them what they want), I believe this because they may not have a lot of money and probably live of benefits or are living in a council house , and since they yet do not earn money they do not know the value of it , so money goes out , faster then it comes in. My target audience is in the aspirers category in the psychodynamics profile, this is when people who desire status and success also the esteem of the people. As well as ambitious and status symbols such as designer labels, and expensive and impressive car ,these people aspire to be wealthy and influential and people who care more about the brand name then the actual product itself. I think my target audience can not be ,succeeders because those are people who have got the status and control and are high earners also they are living a high standard and a lead a life of luxury. However in comparison to this I believe aspirers who want to be succeeders would buy my magazine as a way to get advice, tips or learn methods to a short term goal of getting rich quick. Also Reformers can NOT be in my audience because they are people who are less selfishly motivated and care less about status , but more on they caring professions, or Mainstreamers which are 40% of the population and follow the dominant ideology e.g. like the leisure and sense of belonging . Q2. How does your media product represent particular SOCIAL GROUPS ? Use of model who is clearly between 16-24 year old range. Also because the model is white and male it will attract a white male/female audience but also black male audience because hip-hop originated from them and it is what the genre is all about . From my research which I found out all 16-24 year olds favourite genre of music was hip-hop. Also I found out that all the 16-24 year olds mainly read only hip-hop music magazines such as VIBE and CHASER. As well as that all 16-24 year olds knew major hip-hop artists such as Jay Sean and lil Wayne, which I have included in my magazine, I think my music magazine is easily recognisable and potentially appealing to someone who is specifically into Hip-Hop music and culture. I feel my magazine would be popular in this social group as Hip – Hop is very recognisable genre as it is publicised in the media through celebrities and big music artist such as Chris Brown and Cheryl Cole. Images - the images are taken of both males and females within the 16-24 age group, and therefore people would buy my magazine because the celebrity on the front cover is of the same age group to them and is going thorough the same difficulties and obstacles in life as the reader, and in theory they would buy the magazine as it would relate to them, and the exclusive interview would give them advice on how they overcome their struggles ,and how the readers can conquer there troubles so that they can succeed in life.
Fonts & Colour Schemes – the fonts I used were meant to be simplistic, bold and basic, this was to help reach out to a wider audience , also the colour scheme appeals to both genders at it is not bright pink which would stereotypically appeal to females also I used my colour scheme which is red, blue, orange and black and the occasional odd colour to make certain sub - headings stand out .I believe it effectively reflects my target audience, which is 16 to 24 year old males and females.
Background – my background is of a wall of a typical urban street. I believe that the background helps to represent the social group of 16 – 24 year olds, as it is where the youngsters usually spend their time or “hang – out and chill”. So I believe that this will appeal to them as is resembles their lifestyles , their habits also who and where the usually spend their spare time.

Font – the font I used was “Gill Sans Ultra Bold”. I believe that this was a good choice because it was bold and simple , and also the added different colours made it more attractive and therefore , I believe is represents the social group of 16 – 24 year olds as their lifestyles are bold, fun loving and the best years of their life as they are surrounded by friends and family.
Photography – the original images I took where mainly of the typical 16-24 year olds to enhance the sense of belonging to by target audience ,as they are of the same age group. In my images used the model’s facial expressions are happy and they are smiling encouraging people to read my magazine as no one likes to read a magazine if the images are unappealing to the audience.
Overall Layout – I believe that my overall layout, represents to the social group of 16 - 24 years ,this is because the coloured boxes separate the sub – headings and it is easy to access all pages, as teenagers do not want to waste time and read through lots of text to get to the articles which they want to read.
Colour Schemes – the range of bold and bright colours contribute to the , youth – full look I am trying to pursue in order to attractive my target social groups . From my questionnaire I have evaluated that the best colour combinations that people want to see are as showed, also in the shelf the dark and bright colours will stand out, thus catching the potential buyer to pick up my magazine and buy it.
Strap line – “Turn up the volume and AMPLIFY your life to the max”- this is the main concept of my whole magazine condensed into one line - it evaluates the main point of my magazine and why is appeals to my target audience of 16 – 24 year olds. As your teenage years are usually filled with showers of homework, peer pressure and exams . The main point of my magazine was to show the fun side of growing up and getting your own way and I believe that my magazine’s slogan clearly represents this.

Q2. How does your media product represent particular SOCIAL GROUPS ? Amplify- Double Page Spread My magazine also represents particular social groups , as it acts as a form of escapism. Where teenagers and young adults can rewind and relax from showers of homework, peer pressure and just to aspire and think how they could reach there dreams by reading the success stories of new young artists who have worked hard and already made it to the top , this shows that people can change their lifestyles to suit their needs in terms of how they want society to see them and this helps portray that anything is possible and “Amplify” could help give advice and support to teenagers who’s self esteem is low and therefore help them build confidence and make their first big steps in the big bad world of the music industry. I have represented the social group of 16-24, which my magazine is aimed by reflecting the hip hop genre through the use of posing, facial expressions and clothing. As hip hop artists typically wear designer labels to emphasise their power and wealth , and impact on society .I have dressed my male model in designer labels as I believe this will attract aspirers, as they will idolise them , as usually they have no sense of judgement, because if a certain celebrity or artist is wearing certain designer clothes they would buy it ,just to look like them and aspire to be like them also to believe that by doing this , it will help them to get there foot through the door and use this as a stepping stone to get into the music industry and want the big producers to recognise their talent and make them look no different to the biggest young new comer artist of today. I believe that the uses of different bright colours throughout my music magazine, will influence the colourful and bold side from a teenagers into becoming a young adult, it also resembles the lifestyle you are about to leave behind the careless, money wasting side and bring on the hard work, determination and the skills needed to become successful and get your place in life. The use of the model being quite young helps me represent the social group of 16 – 24 year olds ,as it portrays their interest and appeals to the younger audience.
Similar hip-hop magazines target the same age range. An example is Hip-Hop connection magazine which has at 78% target audience between 17-28 as listed in their media pack for 2009.
Also my social group also are involved in hip-hop genre which is similar to hip-hop magazine because it says in there MEDIA pack that “they are also voracious fans that walk, talk, live and breathe hip-hop” which is similar to my audience.
Also my target audience is mainly male orientated similar to XXL magazine due to their media pack of 2006 which states their target audience Male 58% and Female 42%

This is because it reaches over 19 million UK adults across multiple media and adding a hip-hop music magazine will increase the amount of adults reading Bauer’s media product.
Also because Bauer media has no hip-hop music magazines on their market ,but instead have magazine such as Smash Hits, Kerrang and Q.
So adding a different type of music genre ,will increase the amount of people reading Bauer’s media product as it has a worldwide circulation for selling 38 million copies a week in 15 countries
Bauer Media also has Bauer Radio which consists of Heat Radio, Q Radio, Smash Hits! Radio and The Hits Radio will are available on DAB and Free view. So having a hip-hop music magazine may encourage them to start a radio station which broadcast hip-hop music in order for Bauer to increase the number of people viewing their media via magazine and radio so increasing their sales overall.

This is because it is UK’s leading consumer magazine and digital publishers with a massive portfolio selling over 350 million copies each year. Also because it have over 85 iconic print brands
It doesn’t have any hip-hop music magazine but instead magazines such as “NME” and “Uncut” which is punk rock and Britpop genre. Thus adding my media product will increase sales for IPC media because targeting a much broader audience in this case 16-24 year olds who are into the genre of hip-hop. Also it will not compete or clash with the other top-selling magazines such as “NME” and “Uncut” because not of the same type of genre and so should not cause problems.
I have chosen IPC media to distribute my magazine as it has partnerships with the big branded supermarkets, so this can widen my target audience, as it will be more freely available in supermarkets to who ever wants to buy my magazine. Also because people will have to go shopping as it is compulsory to eat ,and it will not seem as expensive if it is added to your weekly bill, from the trip to the supermarkets.

This is not a media institution but a an independent magazine publisher only publishing Rewind Magazine.
Rewind magazine will not be an appropriate institution ,because it is a British based magazine mainly based on RnB ,Grime , Dup-step and UK garage type of music. It circulation of more than 240,436 copies each month of the year as well as being the largest urban magazine within UK.
Thus using my hip-hop will clash with their magazine and force their buyers too chose which magazine of the same genre to buy or stop subscribing. Also may reduce sales for Rewind Magazine.

Q4. Who would be the AUDIENCE for your media product? I believe that my music magazine , “Amplify” which portrays the niche market of Hip – hop , would be successfully aimed at the social group/class of 16 – 24 year olds , these are the older teenagers who are turning into young mature adults , who are trying to build their confidence and become independent individuals. I wanted to portray my target audience , in a way that breaks the classic stereotype , without associating 16-24 year old with drugs, violence , crime or swearing, because not all teenagers and young adults are like that, and I believe that my magazine helps to aspire young artist to follow their dreams and helps others to get motivated by reading other young artist’s success stories and leading them on to become hard working , and a completely individual and different persona . My magazine was not originally aimed at the audience with the typical high standard choice of a luxury lifestyle with big disposable incomes , however I was aiming for the social group of people around 16 – 24 years who ASPIRE to become like them , and will do anything to follow in their foot steps in order of becoming successful.

I have tried to appeal to all ethnicities in some ways, the artist and bands will be from different backgrounds and ethnicities .Also the music will be hip hop but in different sub genres , and different artist such as Jay Sean and Chris Brown have been mentioned ,their song genre is the same but their ethnicity+ race is not. Also the images will be of different people from different social backgrounds , but will still relate to hip –hop.
Interests – a general thirst for the hip – hop genre and this magazine should help widen their knowledge on the current world around them and how they will take their place in life, teenagers and young adults who are into the fashion industry , buy into the latest treads and the newest gadgets are never a problem in the bank of mum and dad.
My target audience of 16- 24 age group as these are usually people who spend their money on items ,like music magazines. To learn more about the reader of the magazine I produced a questionnaire and readership questions which helped me create the my hip - hop magazine for the developing world of 16 – 24 year olds. The questionnaire was given completed by both male and female consumers and music magazine consumers. This gave me an insight into what was needed in my magazine to attract that specific audience. Knowing that 16 – 24 year olds are more interested in mainstream music and the popular music genre my magazine represents than any other age group, therefore this was the most fitting audience. In the questionnaire I asked open questions like “Which artists/bands do you prefer?” , in response to this question many people chose “JLS” and “Justin Bieber” , who are new comer artist and are around the similar age group, people also said that they related to them as they where experiencing the same teenage difficulties as any other teenager and so it was a good bonding between the artist and the reader, who may never even meet in real life , it was just the connection which inspires young teenager to become a celebrity one day.
Q5. How did you attract/address your audience? I believe I have attracted my audience though many ways, firstly by using a wide range of pictures, from both Asian and White ethic groups and had a variety of female and male images to attract a wider audience .These pictures which I had used had a certain impact of what genre my music magazine is about and who is it about just by looking at the main image, I believe it reflected the true personality and lifestyle of the reader and what being a 16 – 24 year old is about. It attracts the audiences by reflecting the codes and conventions of the genre of hip – hop , through the emotions the central images demonstrates, for example the facial expressions are slightly hard core but still are enhancing and therefore encouraging the reader to continue reading. My images was to develop and construct an emotion which mirrors the happier and carefree side of being a young mature adult I did this in order for “amplify “ genres to become more recognisable and attractive to its audience. The use of pugs for free items , also attract my audience of 16-24 year olds because it offer a opportunity to gain something for free. In order to attract my target demographic, I felt that the design is the one of the most important part in attracting the audience. “Amplify” magazines design was not the usual, column layout and boring writing with limited images - , I tried to enhanced my readers and create a different simplistic view of what a actual real hip-hop music magazine should look like, in order to do this, I researched many similar magazines such as Vibe and Chaser, so instead of the normal columns layout I used colourful bold and bright coloured rectangular shapes to make the key slogans and strap line stand out. Amplify - Front Cover I believe I have attracted my target audience with the use of pugs such as “ * FREE poster of LIL RAYNE *” and “ 100 ways to get FREE music”, the fact that this information is freely available to the reader and that they do not have to pay for it can influence whether they buy my magazine for not , also my social group of 16-24 year olds , may be still living with their parents, in full time education or have a part time job so money is tight , also the fact that this is a monthly not weekly or daily magazine will help encourage them to buy as it will only be published twelve times a year , compared to fifty – two times a year if it was a weekly magazine , therefore the quality and standard of the latest information is of the highest class of excellence. ‘ Amplify your life…’ I used the strap life to lure and attract the audience, this is to illustrate to them that “Amplify” is the magazine to read which allows you to access the ‘now’ of fashion, life and of course the latest buzz in the music industry. The mast head is used to attract the audience due to the three – dimensional looked I have represented through the front cover of the magazine. the mast head also address to the audience that the magazine is related to the up coming form being a teenager into becoming a young adult. I used the colours on the magazine front cover to portray the lifestyle of the artist’s represented in the magazine. I did this to attract the audience to the magazine making them feel part of this universe of celebrities, making them aspire to be like the celebrities characterized in my magazine .I used the relevance of the magazine to catch the attention of the targeted audience, I used the language and lifestyle to address the audience. Using them to attract the audience into buying the magazine.
Q6. What have you learnt about TECHNOLOGIES from the process of constructing this product? Throughout the process of making my music magazine I have learnt many new skills which I will be using in later life. As I am not the best of all at using technology doing this task helped me expand my knowledge and get a general grasp on how to use new programs , edit and enhance images and successfully produce in my opinion a good hip-hop magazine which would appeal to the 16-24 year old audience. In the process of constructing my magazine I have learnt various aspects of different technologies….
ICT Skills – by doing this task I was able to build on my ICT skills, and use different websites such as “Blogger” and “Slide share” . Firstly using a blog was new for me and I love learning and experiencing new things , as it helps me expand my knowledge and brings me new challenges. Blogger allowed me to make posts and create pages expressing my work in new forms of media such as uploading videos from YouTube and using moviemaker also create videos and presentations and by using Slide share ,I could embed the PowerPoint's like this one to my blog.
Programs – whilst making my music magazine I had to express my knowledge and understanding of different programs . Programs such as Adobe Photoshop Cs3 and Adobe Indesign helped make my magazine as professional as possible. Adobe Photoshop Cs3 helped my enhance , alter and remove background and filter my images to make them look as eye – catching and amazing as possible, also I could convert my images to make them to the best quality without ruining the original quality of the images and without leaving the image pixelated .Adobe Indesign helped me build up my magazine on separate layers and the quality of the text was so clear ,even when zoomed in , and at the end it compressed the layers into one end product which is my magazine, also this program allowed me to build up layers without bleeding one image into another , which I found incredibly amazing.
Uploading + Downloading – as I never had a blog before uploading and downloading was like alien language to me , however after using blogger and slide share is was so easy to convert files and upload presentations onto slide share and embed them onto blogger, it was quite the same with any videos I had created on moviemaker and published on YouTube as the quality was better.
Photography – using the amazing quality cameras such as the Nikon D90 SLR – camera was a privilege , I have always loved taking photos but not ever at such high intense quality , and I got to explore the world of photography , with the use of my prior knowledge such as high- key and low – key lighting and the use of different camera angles. Using this camera allowed me to take incredible images with just the click of button , and they where of such high quality I did not really need to alter anything other then removing the background .
Most of all – I learnt the importance of continuous saving as importing, converting , uploading and downloading takes up a lot of memory and caused on numerous occasions my computer to freeze and , flushed all my hard work down the drain , so the best lesson I learnt was to save my work every few minutes to help my magazine survive in the frozen madness.
Q7 .Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learned in the progression from it to the full product? Looking back at my preliminary task , I feel I that this experience was a work in process, from which I have learnt many new skills and developed my understanding and my current knowledge about the production of music magazines and the science behind it all , for e.g. , what social groups certain magazines appeal to and why , how to attract a specific audience, its was just the depth of research and planning I had to do , in order to make my music magazine successful. Taken on board the feedback, which I got after making my school magazine, and giving out questionnaires for my research on music magazines, I believe I have progressed a long way, in the completion of my finished media product. I learnt how to alter, change and edit images in Photoshop and save them in the correct format, which allowed my to take across to Adobe Indesign and then build my magazine upon.
Learnt the importance of continuous saving to prevent my work being deleted.
*EXTRA QUESTION* - Q8. How I developed my flat plan to successfully create a media product – music magazine ? Throughout the process of the making of my music magazine I always kept referring to my flat plan , however I have made some changes due to lack of space and just the layout didn’t seem right. But the overall design and layout of the magazine is still the same one as my flat plan, just with some minor adjustments to make it look more attractive. Changes made to my Front Cover… Changes made to my Double Page Spread … Changes made to my Contents Page …
I did not add the right third, due to the lack of space and was not in any of the codes and conventions of a music magazine.
I added in the artist’s name – as it will stand out and hence potential buyer will have the erge to pick it up and read what my magazine is about.
Altered some of the colours to make the “exclusive “, topics stand out.
I changed the background form plain black into a wall form a urban area, this would increase my sales as it resembles where the typical 16 – 24 year old spend most of their time.
I changed the images so it is on the left hand side , where originally it was on the right hand side, as most double page spreads have their images in the left hand side bleeding into the right , I attempted to do this, but the images looked too squashed and ruined the professional look I wanted to portray throughout my magazine in order to make it a successful hip-hop magazine .
I did not many changes to the contents page , in comparison to my front cover and double page spread. Due to lack of space I did not add another two more boxes with different sub – headings.
I changed the font because he 3 – dimensional font was black and so was my background , this made on font look smaller , so I decided not to use it – and therefore changed the font to make my magazine look more interesting and appealing to the audience.
