  • So, thank you everyone for attending, my name is Derek Siler and I’m a Senior Product Manager for SunGard focused on DR solutions for Data Domain. We’re going to spend a few minutes speaking about Timesharing Disaster Recovery. What this means is how you can provide your customers not just a storage replication solution but a true application availability solution that leverages our investments in shared recovery infrastructure and our expertise in DR for both physical and virtualized applications – all for a fraction of the cost of the customer doing it themselves or using a local colocation provider.
  • So before we talk about how the TCO of our service stacks up against an internal solution, let’s discuss a bit about the costs of not being prepared.Industry analysts we work with have conducted research on the average cost of downtime from an IT outage and concluded that companies lose an average of $90K per hour of downtime, which includes including loss of productivity, customer churn and the obvious damage to your company’s reputation in the market. And these disruptions can have serious business impact. The most telling of is that over three quarters of companies that experience a serious outage, that do not have a comprehensive, and successfully tested DR plan, will be out of business within two years.
  • And all businesses have some sort of data backup plan, many do not have a serious plan for DR, and even those that do, with an internal solution for bringing up their applications to a second site, like a test/dev facility or a local colo, their solution maybe significantly more challenging than they assume. Not only do you have the additional sunk capital for redundant server infrastructure, but much more importantly, the customer may not have the available staffing and expertise to actually perform the recovery when its needed.
  • So this really gets at the core value proposition of SunGard and that is leveraging our shared recovery model. If we take an example of a standard SunGard recovery customer with 100+ servers, a mix of Wintel and Linux-based protected applications and 50+ TB of protected data, a hosting and replication solution with shared recovery infrastructure may cost on average $15-$20k in monthly expense. If the customer were to do that solution themselves, that would costs them north of $40k in monthly expense in addition to the capex requirement of maintaining a DR infrastructure And as you can see, the isn’t in the hosting services for the target side device, the savings is almost entirely in the shared recovery infrastructure. When you add in the cost of acquisition, virtualization, maintenance, management, financing among others, SunGard can provide a superior solution at a savings of over 60%.
  • These two services, our Vaulting and Recovery Solution for Data Domain and our Storage Replication Service for RecoverPoint, are both available in the EMC-Select third-party products catalog as pre-packaged SKUs Both offer configuration of the replication network, hosting services for the target Data Domain or EMC array, and on-demand recovery infrastructure for physical and virtual apps. And for Data Domain, hosting space can be procured in full or half-rack configurations depending on the space requirements for the DR Data Domain appliance.
  • So how do these services differ from a colocation provider or customer doing their own DR. At the start of the service stack the solutions are comparable, all require provisioning of space/power, network configuration and monitoring to make sure the data successfully replicated. Where SunGard differentiates is as you move through the service layers into support for dedicated AND shared recovery servers, available fully-managed recovery programs, overall program TCO, and flexibility in meeting variable RTO requirements by application.
  • We have more information available on this program at our booth, so I won’t go into too much detail here, but Select does offer a misc SKU and we can add these programs in when the customer is looking to outsource DR with the assurance of a contracted service-level agreement. Our Managed Recovery Program is a turn-key outsourced DR program that incorporates our data replicationservices for Data Domain and RecoverPoint. For customers that want the assurance of full, SLA-backed SunGard driven recovery, we take over recovery procedure development, test planning and setup, and at time of test, data restoration and OS startup – the client can be onsite or remote for recovery tests, and we account for ongoing change in the customer’s production environment to make sure those changes are reflected in their recovery environment with Recovery Lifecycle Management and this can cover applications and environments from Simple Wintel Apps, to Complex N-Tier applications all the way to legacy apps running on mainframe.
