2. Upcoming Burbot Bash Fishing Derby
Between February 1 and February 3, 2013, fisherman will flock to the
Flaming Gorge Reservoir on the border of Utah and Wyoming for the
Burbot Bash Fishing Derby. State wildlife agencies first started the
unique fishing derby three years ago in an effort to reduce
populations of the invasive burbot. While the burbot is native to
Wyoming, it was introduced by humans to the waters west of the
Continental Divide. Since they crossed the mountains, the fish have
caused significant damage to the ecosystem, competing with bass for
food and even eating the smallmouth bass.
3. Upcoming Burbot Bash Fishing Derby
Rather than begin an expensive, labor-intensive internal measure to
rid the reservoir of burbot, the agencies are calling upon local
fisherman. In the upcoming competition, more than 400 fishing
enthusiasts will have the opportunity to win prizes for catching the
most or the biggest burbot. The grand prize winner will take home
$10,000 for catching one of the pre-tagged fish.
