To make available (in a reusable way) the practices devised to enable greener ICT systems, VU University Amsterdam has developed an online green ICT practices library (http://greenpractice.few.vu.nl) consisting of more than 200 practices collected from Dutch data centers and the literature. This presentation will introduce the functionalities provided by the library and explain how this library can help you learn and share green knowledge. Furthermore, details about the data model of the library and the scientific approach to collecting the green practices will be explained.

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES 1/4 – DEFINE A GREEN PRACTICE MODEL 2 Opening Green ICT Practices to Higher Education - set up a library for green knowledge An ontology to structure the information to be stored in the library. Potenza. “Aligning Economic Impact with Environmental Benefits: A Green Strategy Model.” In First International Workshop on Green and Sustainable Software (Greens 2012), co-located with ICSE, pp. 62-68. IEEE, 2012.

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES 2/4 – COLLECT DATA  Collect and codify practices from industry • Studied 132 green actions gathered by multiple data centers as part of MJA agreements decided by the Funding Agency of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation. • Codified 76 green practices as an input for the library.  Collect and codify practices from the literature • Carried out a literature study and found 447 green practices resulted from the search • Among which, 182 green practices were identified as useful inputs for the library 3 Opening Green ICT Practices to Higher Education - set up a library for green knowledge

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES 3/4 - IMPLEMENTATION  Implement the online green practices library with the following functions: • Registration is required for sharing practices. • Browsing is open to both registered and unregistered users. Users can browse practices by goals, categories, environmental effects, economic impact, or tags. • Searching provides users a quick and easy way to find practices that fit their needs. Users can search the whole library with keywords or further filter searching results with more specific keywords. • Discussion board offers a platform for users share their opinions or experiences on certain practices. 4 Opening Green ICT Practices to Higher Education - set up a library for green knowledge
