  • SteveJB SteveJB For the record, I now call 'tab groups' 'tab folders.' The above slide deck has not been submitted as a design challenge entry (it has been submitted for discussion on http://is.gd/1j9mY) as the concept is yet to be refined. A new tab folder button when clicked would open an empty page with a list of tabs that can be dragged into the tab folder (a more aesthetically pleasing version of slide 4.)

A more feature complete version of the concept would have (warning, do not read furthur if unwilling to flex some visual thinking muscle) a new 'tab folder button' placed next to a new tab button (the new tab button can be seen in Safari 4 and Firefox 3.5) in the tab bar of browsers. When the new tab folder button is clicked, tab folder appears in the bar and a tab organization screen appears as well (a pop up window could be used to display the screen or it could be fit into a blank page) where users can drag and drop from a list of current tabs some of which may already be grouped into a list of currently available tab folders or alternatively users can drag and drop tabs from the tab bar directly into the new tab folder which appears in the tab bar when the new tab folder button is clicked.

If the design ideas and concepts inspire you, please link back to the slide deck.
