Market Wharf

Architect Peter Clewes' project near St. Lawrence Market on the east side of downtown has gotten a lot of attention for blending a style that evokes the surrounding historic buildings, while throwing a modernist tower -- complete with crazy, wavy balconies -- into the city skyline. Developed by Context Developments, the building opened in 2012.

Market Wharf incorporates a lengthy list of environmentally friendly practices to keep Mother Nature and our residents happy. • Orientation of building is conducive to passive solar heating in cool weather; continuous balconies provide sun shading in warm weather • Floor to ceiling windows minimize artificial lighting usage by enhancing penetration of daylight to interior spaces • Optional sun screening window shades reduce summer solar heat gain • Energy efficient thermal glazed aluminum windows with thermally insulated Low-E double glazed glass • A master light switch at the front door that controls apartment lighting in all two and three bedroom suites • Individual suite electricity metering • Adhesive-free hard surface flooring (also selected for greater durability than engineered hardwood) • Energy Star appliances, front loading washers & dryers and locally manufactured kitchens • Optional dual flush toilets • Compact fluorescent lighting in all hallways • High efficiency lighting in corridors, garages and emergency exits with motion sensors • Less elevator usage because of parking on same level as residential on floors 4 through 6 • Efficient landscaping irrigation systems • Green roofs, rooftop landscaped areas and terraces reduce urban heat island effect and storm water run-off • Landscaped roof terraces, green roofs and/or highly reflective rooftop membranes (to reduce heat gain in the summer) • Drought resistant vegetation in rooftop landscaped areas • Easily accessible recycling facilities within building (three stream garbage chute) • Recycling of all construction waste reduces landfill • Dedicated parking spaces for hybrid cars • Car share service in building • Natural light in parking garage • High efficiency boilers and chillers • High efficiency fans, pumps and motors • No excavation reduces site disturbance during construction • Walking proximity to public transit and all amenities including grocery stores, schools, theaters etc. • Next door to retailers of locally grown food (St. Lawrence Farmers’ Market)
  • 6. ONCE UPON A TIME In 1808 the first substantial wharf was constructed at the bottom of Church Street between the present day Old York Tower and the Performing Arts Lodge. By 1818, Toronto’s harbourfront was filled with a jumble of wharves and the original public esplanade was born. By 1834, the harbour, like the city, was expanding with close to 30 wharves and piers along its shore. That year, the City of Toronto was founded and opened the original City Hall in what is today’s south market. Today, all that can be found of this era is the huge fan window of the Council Chamber Block, now encased inside the St. Lawrence Market, that at one time gave the Mayor the best view of the harbour below! The St. Lawrence Market is one of Toronto’s most popular landmarks and destinations. Named after the patron saint of Canada…the St. Lawrence neighbourhood in Toronto was actually the downtown centre. In 1803 a Saturday farmer’s market opened and the rest is history.
