  • 1. Nelson Mandela By Aubrey Gruwell-Keating
  • 2. Essential Question What was the point for the Afrikaner nationalists to make apartheid?
  • 3. Why I chose my topic I chose Nelson Mandela as my I-search topic because before I had researched him, I had learned that he was an important man in africa. i wanted to learn more about him.
  • 4. What I already knew about my topic?  Nelson Mandela helped end apartheid  Nelson was a black leader who was put in jail for about 30 years, fighting for apartheid.
  • 5. The beginning of apartheid  Apartheid had started in 1948 and had ended in 1994.  After the Afrikaner nationalists came to power in 1948 apartheid was systematized under law.  Then, blacks had no rights, and were treated differently then whites.
  • 6. The end of apartheid  People were organizing protests, in responce the governments used deadly force putting people in jail.  F.w.de Klerk helped pass laws to end apartheid because of their weak economies.  After apartheid south African’s voted for the first time, and Nelson Mandela was voted president on may 10th 1994.  In 1999, Nelson resigned from his position and has become the south African’s highest ambassador. he has also campaigned in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
  • 7. Questions I still have?  Why did he give up his political carrer if his party stayed in power?
