The pursuer wants to kill “the man” after he kills his family while they slept and he was away.

    31. 31. Author’s biographical info: In this story Rulfo points out how bad the ecnomy is. The quality of land in the redistribution was so bad that entire family’s had to rely on a single possession. </li></ul>

    33. 33. Don Justo; Older man who was very well off and known to have anger issues

Don Justo’s sister; bed ridden but suspicious that her daughter had a lover </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Summary: Old Esteban is accused of killing Don Justo after Don Justo beat him up for killing one of his calf but old Esteban was beaten so severely that he doesn’t remember whether he indeed killed Don Justo or if he died from a heart problem related to his severe temper. </li></ul>
    36. 36. Talpa <ul><li>Characters: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Narrator; Tanilo’s brother and lover of his sister in law.
    37. 37. Tanilo Santos; A man who became very ill with a diesis that made his skin burst with puss and had a horrible stench but believed that the Virgin of Talpa could cure him.

Natalia; tanilo’s wife took him to Talpa knowing that he would die in the journey </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Summary: Tanilo was the one who wanted to go to Talpa hoping that the Virgin would be able to cure his diesis his brother and wife agreed to take him but half way there Tanilo wasn’t feeling well and wanted to return back home but his wife and brother wouldn’t let him and kept pushing him on to walk to Talpa and after reaching the Virgin and praying to her Tanilo still died. Natalia and his brother buried him and felt remorse for having slept with each other everynight on the way to Talpa, having pushed Tanilo knowing he would die anyway. </li></ul>

    43. 43. Tell them not to kill me! <ul><li>Characters: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Juvencio Nava; killed Don Lupe because there was a drought and his live stalk started to die off and Don Lupe wouldn’t share his pasture.
    44. 44. Justino Nava; son of Juvencio Nava, he married Ignacia and had eight children
    45. 45. Colonel Terreros; Son of Don Lupe Terreros, learned that his fathers killer was free and made it a mission to find and kill him
    46. 46. Don Lupe Terreros; a young man who was killed by Juvencio after he caught one of Juvencios animals in his plot of land and killed it. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Summary: Don Lupe had warned Juvencio to keep his animals off his plot of land but Juvencio had no other choice but to cut the fence at night and let his animals graze on Don Lupes land in order for them to survive. Don Lupe ended up killing one of Juvencios animals and in rage Juvencio attacked him with a matchete and left to die a slow and painful death. After thirty-five years of hiding with his son Juvencio thought that he would live his last years in peace but Colonel Terreros found him and executed him for killing his father and causing his mother to die from grief and leaving him without parents. </li></ul>

    51. 51. Remember Characters: <ul><ul><li>Urbano Gomez; Born very poor he would sell or raffle anything in his possession, got kicked out of town after getting caught fooling around with his cousin in school. Came back to town as a police officer.
    52. 52. Eggplant; Urbano’s mother she was called eggplant because every time she fooled around she would end up getting pregnant. The small fortune she had was lost in all the funerals that she did for her children who would die shortly after being born
    53. 53. Natalia; the only daughter of eggplant to live and only sibling to urbano, she married Nachito and later on had to set up a fruit juice stand near the freeway to support him.
    54. 54. Nachito; became very lazy after getting married, ended up playing the mandolin which he borrowed from the barber. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Summary: Urbano got kicked out of school before the fifth year because he got caught fooling around with his cousin and after getting beaten by his uncle he left town. Urbano came back as a police officer and one night Nacho decided to serenade him and Urbano ended up killing him. It was said that he hung himself after getting caught and even picked out the tree from where he was going to get hanged. </li></ul>
    55. 55. No dogs bark <ul><li>Characters: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>The father of Ignacio; he’s ashamed of his son who steels and kills people but still tends to Ignacio when he gets injured.
    56. 56. Ignacio; is a thief who’s killed people, one of them being Tranquilino who baptized him when he was little.
    57. 57. The dogs; they were a sign that they would have reached the town of Tonaya where there was a doctor to treat Ignacio’s wounds </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Summary: Ignacio’s mother died shortly after he was born; he grew up to a thief and killer who with some friends would kill people who were travelling in and out of town but after he killed one of his fathers close friends his father refused to acknowledge his as his son. Ignacio and his friends were very badly wounded, his friends died but Ignacio’s father carried him on his back all the way to the town of Tonaya were he could get medical treatment. Ignacio father tells him that the only reason he didn’t let him die was because of his mother’s memory, how she would have never forgiven him if he left their son to die but he warns Ignacio never to go back to town and to leave so he never has to hear from him again. </li></ul>
    58. 58. Paso del Norte <ul><li>Characters: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>The son; after not having financial success he decides to immigrate into America to earn some money so he can return to his hometown and be able to provide for his family.

    60. 60. Transito; The sons wife and mother of his 3 sons and 2 daughters. She ends up leaving him for another man while he tries to go to America.
    61. 61. Estanislado; He organized everything so that a group of men could immigrate into the U.S. by crossing the Rio Grande, but died shortly after the group of men were ambushed and shot at in the Rio.
    62. 62. The immigration officer; finds the son near the Rio Grande next to a dead body and interrogates him and in the end lets him go back to his hometown. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Summary: the story is a dialogue between father and son. The son must beg his father to take care of his family while he tries to go to America to make a better living, but in the process ends up pointing out how his father never taught him the firework trade so he wouldn’t be a competition for his father and how he never approved of his wife when they were dating. The father tells his son how he should be grateful for what he has in life and that he never liked his wife enough to give him permission to marry her and tells his son that he only comes to him when he needs something but never to visit him and how lonely he’s been since his children left home, but in the end he agrees to take care of his sons family knowing that his son will re-embers him for the money he will spend taking care of the family. The son comes back to tell his father that he never made it to the other side, the group of men got shot at in the Rio and he was the only survivor and the father tells his son that his wife ran off with a mule man and his children are sleeping in the back. </li></ul>

Anacleto Morones <ul><li>Characters: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Lucas Lucatero; Son-in-law to Anacleto morones and last person to be known to have family bonds to him, wanted so that he could declare that Anacleto was a holy person and could be made into a saint in church. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>self off as a saint in order to sell relics and con people out of money.and con people out of money. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Pancha fregoso; the last woman from the congregation who stayed with lucas overnight beliving that she would be able to persuade him to go into town with her in the morning.
    64. 64. Nieves Garcia; one of the ten woman who are from the Congregation of Amula and past lover of Lucas who became pregnant and had to abort because Lucas left her.
    65. 65. Eldemiro and Lirio Lopez ; men from the town that accused Anacleto of being a fake saint and sent him to jail, but later on both men died and the town saw it as god punishing both men for accusing Anacleto of being fake. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Summary: Anacleto managed to escape out of prison and goes to Lucas for money so that he could flee to the north but Lucas ends up killing him and burying Anacletos body in his back yard. The ten woman of the Congregation go to Lucas hoping that he will go into town and declare that Anacleto was a saint and should be added into the church as a saint, but in the process Lucas ends up driving away each of the woman except for one, Pancha who refuses to believe that “the holy child” ever had ill intentions for the people he met, while Lucas tells her Anacleto was a horny selfish man who only looked out for himself in the end pancha help Lucas throw rock on top of where Anacletos body is buried not knowing that he’s buried there and not in heaven like she thinks. </li></ul>
