How do you make yourself more productive when working from home? How do you make yourself more productive when working from home? Presentation Transcript

  • How do you stay productivewhen working from home? With flexible working on the rise, more and more employees are choosing to clock in fromthe comfort of their own homes. How do you make sure you’re working productively?
  • Create aworkspaceThe problem with working fromhome versus being in the office isyou no longer have a deskprovided for you.Working on the sofa won’t giveyou the right mentality – makesure to create your ownworkstation and pay attention tothings like posture, because thisdesk needs to be comfortable forlong hours.
  • Getwork-readyIt’s not enough to roll outof bed and get started – agood attitude to workstarts with treating it like aday in the office. It will make you moreproductive to get up, getcoffee, shower and dress, and change your mentalityfrom “at home” to “atwork”.
  • Outline your tasksMaking to-do lists isn’t anexclusively working-from-hometip – you should always have aclear list of priorities and timeframes in which to get thingsdone.Apps like Asana or Wunderlistmake it easy to assign tasks, setimportance and dates and checkthings off. If you tend to putthings off, you can set deadlineswith your supervisor.
  • CommunicateWorking from home can beisolating, and make you feellike you’re no longer part of ateam. It can also highlight tensionsand make the communicationyou do have seem strained.Make sure you keep in contactthrough Instant Messaging, video conferencing and onlinecollaboration.
  • Have workhoursFlexible working tends tomean workers lose track oftime – they don’t focus 9-5and then aren’t able to letgo at the end of the day.To keep yourself focused, setyourself regular work hours.Make it clear you’re on thejob at that time and don’teven check email outside ofthat time – checking email isone of the biggest timewasters.
  • Take a breakNow that you’ve got yourworking hours set, makesure that when it comes tobreak you do actually take abreak.Get up, move around, eataway from the computer, have a conversation – butfor the sake of your healthand sanity, make sure it is areal break.
  • Know yourselfFlexible working oftenencourages us to put offthings that are hard, takebreaks, go slow overprojects we don’t enjoy.Don’t let yourself lose holdof what you’re doing –browsing the internet canget you off task, so even ifyou’re only making smallsteps make sure you’removing forward.
  • Get some quietBeing at home is great – youcan catch up on the laundry, spend time with the kids…If this is your approach toworking from home, it’s timeto stop.To get your best work doneyou need to minimisedistractions and keep thingsquiet. Let your family knowthat during work hoursyou’re not available.
  • Step away fromthe screenThere are some fantastic waysto stay in touch online – IM,social collaboration, etc. – butdon’t let this be your onlycommunication. You need to make sure youhave conversations with co-workers over the phone andeven pop into the officeoccasionally if possible.
  • Finish yourworking dayThe biggest danger when itcomes to flexible working? Neversigning off.Make sure that you stick to sethours, take tech-free breaks, andthen let go of the work at theend of the day.The majority of people get to go home at the end of the day. When work isin your home, it’s important to set defined times when you’re going towork, and when the time passes, stop. If you don’t rest at the end of theday, you can throw off your work-life balance.
