What is Cloud Computing? • Style of computing where scalable and elastic IT-related capabilities are provided as a service to customers, using Internet technologies. • It allows business to increase IT capacity on the fly and in real time without investing in new infrastructure. • Cloud computing is a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on- demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services).

Cloud Characteristics •Multi-tenant – the ability to process the needs of multiple users with shared resources in a dynamic and transparent fashion •Elastic – resources can expand and contract as needed •Scalable – resources can scale to tens of thousands of system •Metered/Rented – some manner of “pay for only what you use”‖ •Self-Provisioned – “self check-in” at least to some degree •Internet based – accessible using internet technology, usually over the public Internet •X as a Service – the details/concerns of implementation are abstracted for the customer •Dynamic and Autonomic – Monitoring and Adjusting to meet predefined service levels. •Secure – an overall decrease in risk due to greater security protocols and tools from the cloud provider for data in motion, data at rest and data in process.

Cloud Deployment Models – Public Cloud • Off-site, third-party provider • Offered to multiple customers • Relegation of security management and day-to-day operations to third party vendor. • Customer has low degree of control & oversight of the physical and logical security aspects of a private cloud.

Cloud Deployment Models – Private Cloud • Customers buy, build, and manage and as such do not benefit from lower upfront capital costs and less hands-on management. • Single Organizational tenant. • Variety of Patterns (Dedicated, Community, Managed) • Security management and day-to-day operation of hosts are relegated to internal IT or to a third party with contractual SLAs. • Customer has high degree of control & oversight of the physical and logical security aspects of a private cloud. • Easier for a customer to comply with established corporate security standards, policies, and regulatory compliance.
